This study is to investigate the relationships between stress coping strategies and competence of emotion regulation and behavior problems of children with low-income in 4th - 6th grade in elementary school. For this study two groups were used for comparison. First, children with low-income(N=171), and second, with general(N=228) from 21 different after-school support classes and 2 different school around J, Y city were investigated.
The key findings are as follows:
1. What is the general trend of stress coping strategies and competence of emotion regulation and child behavior problems?
2. What are the relationships among stress coping strategies and child behavior problems?
3. What are the relationships among competence of emotion regulation and child behavior problems?
4. How much are the influence child behavior problems about stress coping strategies and competence of emotion regulation.
The research tools were stress coping strategies scale (Ha-yeong Min and An-jin Yu, 1998) and competence of emotion regulation( Shields and Cicchetti, 1995), and child behavior problems scale (Mi-Hyun Han and An-jin Yu, 1996). Data of 399 children were analyzed using SPSS/WIN 12.0 program. The data were analyzed using statistical techniques such as mean, frequency, percentile, t-test, F-test, pearson's correlation, multiple regression analysis.
The major findings were as follows :
1. In the stress coping strategies and competence of emotion regulation, the children from the low-income families were lower than the general children. In the behavior problem, the children from the low-income families were higher than the general children.
2. In the children from the low-income families, the stress coping strategies were related to the behavior problem, especially anxiety behavior.
3. The competence of emotion regulation were related to the children's behavior problem, and the children who had higher competence of emotion regulation were showed lower behavior problem.
4. In the stress coping strategies of the children from the low-income families, aggressive coping strategy influenced hyperactive behavior problem.
From this study, it was discovered that the relationships between the stress coping strategies, competence of emotion regulation, and behavior problem of the children from the low-income families.
