The purpose of this study is to find out how the stress experienced by families of the schizophrenia affects the patients' personal and social performance and to examine the main effect and moderating effect of Walsh's(1998) Family Resilience Model. The sample of this study is the families of the schizophrenia, which needed further investigations in previous researches, and it also tried to apply FRAS(Family Resilience Access Scale), which was new in Korean researches. Furthermore, while most researches study the buffering effect of family resilience on family's adjustment, this study suggested patients' personal and social performance, which is the main goal in mental health social work as dependent variable. The results as follows after conducting mail survey targeting 17 facilities including psychiatry hospital, community mental health center, and social rehabilitation centers for mental disabilities and 129 respondents who were significant others for the patients; It showed that the family stress affects patients negatively, and it also showed that although the family resilience has an main effect on the performance of patients positively, it did not have an buffering effect on the negative influence of family stress on the performance of patients. Plus, it showed that even if the family resilience has a main effect, it had less effect than family stress. It is also noted that among control variables, only the experiences of using social rehabilitation centers had a significant effect on the patients' performance statistically. The results show that through interventions to improve families' belief system, organizing pattern, and communication process, the schizophrenia's performance or social adjustment can be improved.Family resilience is the positive intervention model for the relief of the family stress and their adjustment. However, noting that the family resilience did not have buffering effect on the families' stress, social and environmental elements have more effect on the function of the schizophrenias than individual or familial elements as social model of disability support. For a family resilience approach is grounded in family system theory, combining ecological and developmental perspectives, it is recommended that the buffering effect of the family resilience is supposed to be activated with change of sociocultural context.
