The purpose of this study is to introduce an appropriate program in promoting health project and executing health education through analyzing, evaluating and grasping the effect on physical symptoms of smoking behavior, drinking behavior, exercise behavior, and dietary habit in the recent perspective that the state of health is not changed by physical circumstance, but by changing attitude and behavior for health.
This study was conducted for 19 days from March 7th to March 25th of the year 2005. The respondents consisted of about 1,000 adults over 20 years of age by random selection in the city of Kimpo.
Items of questionnaires in this study consisted of a variable of economical population variables(8), health level(19), drinking behavior(19), smoking behavior(12), nutrition behavior(20), exercise and weight control(9), and preference of the other programs(1).
For the statistical treatment, SPSS Windows(13.0) was used to analyze the data. For demo-social characters of people surveyed, the Frequency analysis, Chi-square test, and t-test were used. Pearson's correlation analysis was used to grasp the effect of health behaviors and physical symptoms. Multiple regressions were used to analyze the influence of psychological variables on exercise and dietary habits.
The result of this study is summed up as follows:
First, sex had an influence on physical symptoms the most. Especially, female was worse than male, and the older were influenced more than the younger in physical symptoms. Female was influenced more in heart and soul pipe symptom, digestive system symptom, headache symptom, sleep symptom, physical symptom, and the older were worse in heart and soul pipe symptom, headache symptom, insomnia symptom, physical symptom.
Second, there was a positive correlation between drinking behavior and heart and soul pipe symptom, digestive system symptom, sleep symptom, and physical symptom. In fact, the most influencing factor in insomnia symptom was grasped as drinking behavior. Substantially, drinking behavior negatively influenced sleep symptom, heart and soul pipe symptom, digestive system symptom, physical symptom.
Third, there was a positive correlation between smoking behavior and heart and soul pipe, headache symptom, sleep symptom, physical symptom. However, smoking behavior didn't have any particular effect on physical symptom in multiple regressions.
Fourth, there was a negative correlation between exercise behavior and heart and soul pipe, digestive system symptom, headache symptom, sleep symptom, physical symptom. Exercise had an influence primarily on headache symptom. However, it didn't influence the other symptoms.
Fifth, there was a negative correlation between dietary habits and heart and soul pipe symptom, digestive system symptom, headache symptom, sleep symptom, physical symptom. And the fact is that nutrition behavior was the most effective variable on physical symptom. The worse nutrition behavior were, more headache symptom increased, and heart and soul pipe symptom, digestive system symptom, sleep symptom became worse.
Based on the result of this study, for health education I suggest the followings:
That education for female should be emphasized in that female need to be more careful than male in relation to health. It might be a natural consequence that the older become worse biologically. However, I want to emphasize that an individual could maintain health through prevention by the effect of health behavior on the state of health. Not only the old needs continuous care for health, but also the young should be educated more in terms of improving health.
According to health behavior, there were various physical symptoms. Especially as it was observed that nutrition activity has the greatest effect on physical symptoms, healthy dietary habits are not formed and influence on the state of health even if there is abundant food in modern society. When it comes to health promoting education, dietary habit education for female should be given more emphasis.
