Globalization increases cultural exchanges between nations. As a result, the demand for translation of Korean films and vice versa is on the increase. Among other methods of film translation, this paper will focus on subtitling. Subtitling has two main characteristics. The first is the constraint of time and space. Subtitling has the limitation of the screen space and the constraint of the duration of a subtitle due to the characterisitic of the medium. Thus, the subtitler must try to deliver the message of the source language dialogue, sometimes in condensed form, despite the limitation of time and space. At the same time, he must try to minimize the loss of details. The second characteristic is the semiotic composition of subtitling. In semiotic perspective, subtitling is polysemiotic and diasemiotic. Just like other audiovisual medium, films have multi communicative channels: the verbal auditory channel, the non-verbal auditory channel, the verbal visual channel, the non-verbal visual channel. A subtitle, the non-verbal channel, is one of the communicative channels of the film. For this reason, a subtitle should be harmonious with other channels and must match with the scene. The subtitler translates spoken words of the source language into written text of the target language. Because a subtitle is a colloquial text written in target language, it has to be easily read and felt natural to the target language audience. As its main purpose is for entertainment, subtitling skills for films are a little different from that of other audiovisual medium like documentaries. The film subtitler must try to give the same inspiration to the target language audience as the source language audience received. This paper selects three American TV series and analyzes the Korean subtitle of DVD version. Based on these case studies, this paper will consider the effective methods of film subtitling in three aspects: the technical aspect, the message delivery, and the dialogue style. The technical aspects show how to resolve the time and space constraints problem in English Korean subtitle translation. The message delivery introduces transformation of the meaning between the original source language and the Korean subtitle. This is related to polysemiotic characteristic of subtitling. The dialogue style focuses on naturalness of colloquial expressions of the Korean subtitle. This reflects diasemiotic characteristic of subtitling.
