The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of oral care either with normal saline or fantom solution on the oral state of the patients in intensive care unit as well as the frequency of bacteria occurrence inside their oral cavities.
The present research were performed from March thru May of 2003on the nonequivalent control group non-synchronized quasi-experimental design.
The oral states of the patients chosen as the subjects were examined employing the Beck's tool, and culturing the bacteria in a medium for a week.
Twenty subjects were selected for each of experimental group and control group, which were assigned on 131e basis of admission periods.
The obtained data were analyzed using the SPSS 10.0 WIN.
For rho determination of the pre-experimental homogeneity, the common features were analyzed with both x2_test and independent t-test. And the difference in the post-experiment features between the experimental group and control group were analyzed by independent t-test.

The results of this study are as follows:
1.The hypothesis' There is a difference between the experimental group having used normal saline and the control group having used tantum solution' is accepted. So, the oral care with normal saline instead of tantum solution is considered to be effective in enhancing the oral state for the patients in intensive care unit.
2.Because of the small sample size it was difficult to test the statistical difference, however it was found that the bacteria occurrence frequency in the experimental group was less than that in the control group.
Based on the results described above, it is considered that normal saline is considered to be more effective than the fantom solution for the oral care of the patients in intensive care unit.
