The purpose of this study was to identify relationships between self-care practices and meaning in life of the diabetic elderly and to suggest data for developing nursing strategies for improving the meaning in life of the diabetic elderly.
The subjects included 206 diabetics who were over 65 years at the outpatient clinics of three general hospitals in M and C city. Data were collected by face to face interview using structured Questionnaire with' Meaning in life scale' developed by Choi. etal(2003) and' The Self-care scale' developed by Gu(1994) from May22 to August 12, 2003.
The data were analyzed by mean, percentage, independent t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient and Cronbach's α using SPSS WIN 10.0 program.
The results were as follows:
1.The mean score of the self-care was 3.04, According to the field, the medical prescription was 3.92, the diet practice was 2.93 and exorcise was 2.47.
2.The mean score of the meaning in life was 100.98. According to the levels, 13.7% of the subjects pursued meaning in life, 80.8%felt a loss of meaning in life.
3.There were statistically significant differences in the self-care by the existence of spouse(t=3.077, p=.002), the type of living together(F=3.336, p= ,011), the application of spare time(t=3.093, p=.002) and the education of diabetes (F=2.533, p=.042).
4.There were statistically significant differences in meaning in life by the degree of education(F=8.709, p=.000), the existence of occupation(t=2.882, p=.004), the existence of spouse(t=2.141, p= .003),the type of living together(F=2.912, p=.023), the dependence of allowance(F=5,784, p=.004), the dependence of living expenses(F=7.414, p=.001), the assistance of daily life(F=4.615, p=.011), the application of spare time(t=2.208, p=.028) and the perceived health status (F= 11.804, p= .000).
5.There were very low positive significant correlation between theself-care practices and meaning in life(r=0.192, p=0.01).
These research reveals that 80.8% of the diabetic elderly were in a level of existential vacuum. Therefore we recommend that more thorough nursing intervention is needed to improve meaning in life of the diabetic elderly.
