Seeking the possibilities of Korean designs based on the culture has great meaning and value not only in establishing one's cultural subjecthood but also in settling one's identity. Considering the work only to reproduce the traditional factors in the modern designs does no longer have a competitive edge in design, it would be more necessary to find out a scheme to set up and apply the characteristics of unified designs. In addition, in order to present the Korean cultural images into modern fashion based on these characteristics of unified designs, it is required to develop creative, unique, and cultural pride-raising fashion designs which can reflect the inner spiritual factors of traditional culture using physical design factors.
Therefore, this study is to consider the ideas and the features of Korean images with regard to the formative aspects in traditional culture; to set up the general features seen in modern designs; to present models for developing designs on the basis of these; and to seek fashion designs which make best use of Korean images.
To consider the general features of Korean images seen in modern designs, the inherent esthetic sense of Koreans and the formative factors of Korean traditional culture were examined by dividing them into internal and external characteristics, according to the views of domestic and foreign scholars.
On the basis of this, the general features for Korean images were derived by analyzing empirically the examples in which Korean images have been applied in designs, while the range of example to be analyzed empirically was limited to the ones after the 2000s.
The structural features of derived images were analyzed with inner factors, which were presented as a model to develop designs in this study. Accordingly the methodological aspects were to be found to represent Korean images. The results are as follows:
First of all, when the tendency to represent Korean images in modern designs were examined according to the periods, the reproduction of traditional factors and the simple application to highlight tradition were featured in the 60s to 70s, and as the pop culture industry developed and the interests in the characteristic of traditional culture increased, traditional materials were the craze in the 80s. Moreover, as the spiritual value of tradition started to attract public attention, ethnic culture became so influential in design competitiveness that Korean emotions and images started to be interpreted from modern points of view. In the 2000s, by exhibiting the culture industry as contents and Korean images as guarantee of originality, its own identity is beginning to be formed differently.
Secondly, when the structural features from the application examples of Korean images in modern designs were analyzed and examined with inner factors, naturalness was represented with presentation of naturalness through variable and organic structure and inornate naturalness in terms of form, native colors of materials and natural expression of colors using natural white or natural dyeing in terms of color, and the texture of environment-friendly and traditional materials and matters in terms of material. To represent genuinness, simpleness without ornament and moderate colors to emphasize shapes and lines appeared. By means of patternization of traditional factors, structural distortion and experimental representation, and metaphorical interpretation of traditional shades and unrestricted presentation, humorous images were expressed. Humor was also featured through experimentation and creativeness such as applying and mixing traditional material methods and production skills into modern materials.
Third, to represent naturalness by producing works, natural rhythmical sense and organic flow of lines could be expressed with regard to form and simpleness could be performed by using traditional materials with regard to material. It was possible to present genuinness by expressing achromatic colors such as harmony of black and white, and by making the most of characteristics of texture and features in materials.
Fourth, it appeared that structural features such as traditional sewing and industrial arts skills, application of traditional colors and patterns, and traditional items and organization could be embodied to make the internal factors of Korean images have prospect of external features.
With above conclusions, with regard to developing fashion designs using Korean images, it appeared that internal factors could be expressed with external features of Korean images which can be seen generally in modern designs. Therefore, it was indicated that developing unique and creative designs would be practicable.
