This thesis intends to find an educational solution to the global ecological crisis through the ecology of education, rather than environmental or ecological education. Ecology of education is a field in the making that requires further studies. Although various ecological discussions are in progress and a lot of researches are being made on ecological crisis or environmental issues, pedagogical interpretations in the philosophical perspective are quite scarce. The basic premise of ecology of education is the shift from constructive and Lego-style thinking to deconstructive and net-style thinking. If constructive thinking can be regarded as the typical thinking pattern for the modern age, net-style thinking can be seen as ecological thinking. It is thought that a shift in human cognition is more urgent than ever for the sustainable survival of men and the earth. To this end, we should explore every possibility. This paper finds that some possible answers could be found in Asian traditional philosophies, and among them, we focused on Laozi and Zhuangzi's philosophy. The principles of Lao-Zhuang philosophy are deconstructionism and relationality, and thus, it has a lot of implications for the ecology of education.

In this paper, the background of appearance of ecology of education was examined with the focus on its modern and postmodern aspects, and then attention was brought to four educational topics of the paper. The four topics are artificial education, anthropomorphic alternative education, possessive education, and noun-oriented knowledge education. Problems related to these issues were raised especially in modern education. Therefore, the first consideration for ecological discourse should be to contemplate on the characteristics of modernism and postmodernism. Just as postmodernism criticized modernism and tried to build theoretical construction on the foundation of modernism, ecological discourses criticize the negative aspects of modernity and suggest ecology as an alternative solution. Problems inherent in modern education may be recognized by understanding how modernity was formed and became the mechanism that moved the modern society. Development of modernity started with the advent of the Enlightenment movement, and its key components are reason, rationality, science and technology, anthropomorphism, and instrumentalism. Many of these components are problematic, and thus, postmodernism was raised as an alternative to do away with the problems.

Concerning the issue of continuity in the modern and contemporary society, postmodernism has attempted to show that modernism was a fake. It harshly criticizes and deconstructs modernity that created the modernist view of knowledge and human being. In trying to overcome or surpass modernity, it suggests holism, pluralism, and unrepresentability as the characteristics of postmodernism. In relation to education, the constructionist method of learning has been introduced and attempts have been made to deconstruct various relationships in modern education (eg. traditional teacher-student relationship), but there still are limitations. Here we need some new thought.

Ecological discourses has led to the changes in education. It means that educators are now more interested in how to establish the relationship between nature and men. A man's experience accumulated through his relationship with nature influences him all his life. As fish can't live without water, people can't live without nature. Thus, the process of continuously seeking how men can understand nature and what relationship they need to have with it is truly necessary. Education on the ecosystem is made in the names of environmental education, ecological education, and education of ecology. Environmental education stresses recognition and understanding of relationship between men and environment and balanced development between the qualities of human living and environment, and aims at fostering people who can make environmentally responsible decisions and act according to them. Ecological education is an extension of environmental education, and it focuses on men's unavoidable attachment and their responsibilities based on such relationship. However, education in these forms is not sufficient. It is because the existing ecological education was established by laying a block called ecological education on top of the existing modern education. However, ecology of education attempts at a shift from the traditional constructionist and Lego-style thinking to deconstructionist and net-style thinking. Net-style thinking is the thinking that resembles the fundamental features of the world, and thus, seems likely to remove, to some extent, the ill influences of the traditional constructionist thinking.

In Asia, although it has not been highly successful environmentally, the traditional philosophies in the region incorporated correlation, which is quite similar to the claims of ecology. Their similarity in relational thinking led people to take notice of the Oriental philosophies as possible alternatives to today's environmental problems. Among them, Lao-Zhuang philosophy in particular may take a greater importance. Lao-Zhuang philosophy basically has a dualist structure. Concepts of nonexistence and existence, and affirmation and negation are not separated from each other, but are intertwined together, revealing a dualism that is distinguished from dualistic structure. Conflicting concepts are coupled together and relying on each other, showing dual affirmations and dual negations intersected with one another. As can be seen in the story in Zhuangzi's "the sorting which evens things out(齊物論)“, it was attempted to explain the correlations in the world using the concepts of 'this' and 'that,' and the state of non-opposition(無待) in which this and that are not confronting each other was called daoshu(道樞). If one stands at the center of daoshu, everything communicates with one another eternally, and this suggests a level similar to Laozi's gate to all mystery(衆妙之門). Lao-Zhuang thinking is all developed in this dualistic way of correlative thinking. This is where the connection is made to whole-minded principles, relation, and correlation of ecology. Such a structure continues to work in deconstructionist and correlative condition in such concepts as dao (道), virtue (德), non-action (無爲), nature(自然), and knowing (知).

By examining the meanings of tao and virtue, and the most basic principles among various key concepts of Lao-Zhuang philosophy and their functions and effects, we could see that the focus was put on non-artificial aspects. Dao is a concept that incorporates both 'one (一)‘ and 'many (多)’. Virtue is not a subordinate concept to dao, but is rather similar to it.
However, virtue has individuality. If dao takes on the holistic aspect, virtue takes on a kind of particularity. If dao is creation itself, virtue may be the individual aspect within the creation itself. This relationship between tao and virtue directly shows the relativist Lao-Zhuang philosophy. Their thinking is horizontal and there arises no hierarchical order. Qiwu(齊物) and each of all things is itself and at the same time, all other things are 'itself.' Therefore, anthropomorphism or nature-centeredness cannot exist in Lao-Zhuang philosophy. In their philosophy, all centrism are deconstructed. If anthropomorphism and nature-centeredness are desconstructed, then we are left with relation and correlation. In the realm of correlation, there is no superiority and inferiority or largeness and smallness. Therefore, Zhuangzi suggests looking at the world from the perspective of dao, rather than the mundane. When one looks at the world from the perspective of dao, possessive thinking that cannot escape from greed disappears. Desire is closely related to the greed of possession, and thus, Lao and Zhuang take precautions against them. That's why they continue to talk about contentment. When men are liberated from possessive desires, they advance to the level of ontological desire, which in turn leads them to the premier thinking on existence. What actually enables ontological thinking is the thought of death. It is because people naturally become humble and ruminate on the meanings of their lives when they are faced with death. Thus, Lao and Zhuang thought that life and death are not different from each other, and instead, in cohabitation of duality. Thinking is done through human language, and therefore, the issue of knowledge is also important. Once again, Lao and Zhuang emphasizes wu(無) in consideration of knowledge. This is why they reject accumulation of knowledge through learning. Instead, they propose reducing numerous knowledges that one has accumulated after he was born. Therefore, Laozi focuses on ignorance(無知) and Zhuangzi emphasized true knowledge (眞知). Human knowledge is limited, so he suggests the pursuit of true knowledge to overcome the limitations. This points to daoshu(道樞), tianjun(天均), and liangxing(兩行), and it is stressed that such knowledge is not limited to noun-oriented knowledge that only has individual and inherent meanings.

We examined in what aspects Lao-Zhuang philosophy may have significance in the sense of ecology of education, with the focus on the educational aspects of key points found from ecological interpretations. We could see that from Lao-Zhuang perspective, the artificial and behavioral teachings in modern education should be replaced by non-artificial and non-behavioral education. The concept of non-active nature(無爲自然) suggests education based on the principles of nature, and in particular, recommends the probe into the educational meanings of nonexistence(無) and play(遊). Their pedagogical significance is to have an easy attitude in terms of time, space, and mental condition. It is true that there is not enough available space in modern education. The same is true with physical and non-physical aspects. These aspects lead to various abnormal symptoms in education, and thus, it is more essential than ever to secure sufficient time, space and mental freedom. In addition to securing enough space, we need to ensure not to carry out dichotomous and selective education. When something is claimed to be required in education, it is highly likely to head towards anthropomorphic education. Requiring something leads to cramming-style education. It also leads to selective education. Selective education brings things that exist in the world, according to what men believe to be right. Between the good and the evil, people choose the good and exclude the evil, and between the right and the wrong, they choose the right over the wrong. Thus, Lao and Zhuang comment that the dichotomy of the world should be made aware by 'teaching without words(不言之敎)' according to the principle that ' dao follows nature (道法自然)', and that knowledge of discernment(分別知) is undesirable when seen from the perspective of dao. Also, they support the necessity for a shift from possessive education to ontological education claiming that education is necessary that does not separate the body and mind, and regard that ontological desire should be sought through the harmony between the body and mind. It has been realized that the proper education on death and life is required as a means to carry out ontological education. Notably, education on death has been left out in the modern education. According to Lao and Zhuang, life and death are the same, and there is no question which is to be preferred and which is to be neglected. In education, also, dealing with the issue of death can lead to ontological thinking, and it is highly important in relation to ecological problems. In conclusion, what Lao and Zhuang emphasize is the matter of the mind. If education up to now has focused on noun-oriented learning, Lao-Zhuang philosophy points to intransitive-verb style learning. Intransitive-verb style learning is focused on the process, and it suggests emptying one's mind by subtracting rather than adding, and learning about the tranquility that enables going back to one's root. To achieve tranquility, purification of the mind is required. After purifying one's mind, and when the body and mind are calm, he realizes the originality and root of all things, becomes whole and get to handle things better.
