The environmental crisis clock pointed to 9:31 this year getting even closer to 12 O'clock which signifies the time when 'human survival is impossible'. With awareness of the environmental crisis rising, so are the interests and awareness of individuals towards environmentally friendly aspects, and various measures are being drawn up and implemented in each field. The field of design generally expresses and develops such aspects as environmentally friendly design, green design, eco-design, and sustainable design etc.
Sustainable design is an environmentally friendly design concept that appeared in the 21st century along with the appearance of the LOHAS(Lifestyle of Health and Sustainability) class and based on the trends of environmental awareness.
Studies on environmentally friendly fashion focused mostly around the ecology concept of the late 20thcentury with themes such as hippy, ethnic, naturalism, and the recycling of green design, and studies on the slow life tendencies and wellbeing fashion have taken place since then.
As such, though there exist preceding studies on environmentally friendly design and fashion, the forms of expression is changing with the flow of age and studies on the environmentally friendly design (which is based on circular -ity and Sustainability) of 21st century lacking real condition be since wellbing fashion.
In this situation, this study will establish the concept and developments of environmentally friendly design, awareness of which is increasing, and study how these factors are affecting the modern world of design and fashion. The study will then go on to propose ways to increase the life span of products over its life cycle-the entire process of the product from production and use to disuse- and to implement actual functionalistic and recycling practices based on such environmentally friendly design in the 21st century, which emphasizes the preservation and cycle of nature and the environment.
To do so, related literature and precedent studies from abroads well as information from the internet were used to scrutinize research on the concept and characteristics of environmentally friendly design and to divide it into four expressed forms for studying the theoretical background. The trends were analyzed in recently announced fashion work based on the development and flow of environmentally friendly fashion, and the characteristics found in their form, materials and techniques were studied to design and create 8 articles of women's clothing.
The conclusions obtained through this theory study are as follows.
First, the practice of environmentally friendly design cannot be achieved by certain classes who are aware making efforts but by the consumer, producer, government, and social organizations all working together throughout the entire process of production, consumption, and disuse so that a cycle in which the life span of a product is lengthened, and products are circulated instead of being thrown away after using once is established. Also, along with the environmentally friendly element, the flowing society·ethical consciousness must come to foundation fundamentally.
Second, environmentally friendly design can be expressed as Classic & simple in terms of Reduced Design, as Reuse & Recycle in terms of Re-design, as Multi functional and Multi styling in terms of Transformable, and through Future-Eco materials as trend of materials to be expressed through various techniques in fashion design.
The conclusions that get through work manufacture based on this are as follows.
First, I could maximize the environmentally friendly consciousness by applying the concept of environmentally friendly design and the characteristics of forms, and accomplished the spread of expression area in futuristic and reasonable design.
Second, It was possible to express not limited to the environmentally friendly fashion of the ecru-vintage concept but stylish and futuristic designs through unbalanced cuts and handcraft work as patchwork and quilting with new design materials gained through recycling main labels discarded upon production, pieces of material left after cutting of bulk production, decorative ribbons thrown away during everyday life etc., as well as future eco-materials.
Third, It was identified that expressing environmentally friendly design concept to decrease environmental pollution is source of fashion design to give characteristic and new aesthetic value, through presenting message of recycling when disuse clothes by pattern design detail which is possible to reconstruct another style of clothes, or making it possible to multi styling with one clothes to lengthen the life span of a product with reversible material and structural characteristic of clothes.
Thus, by recognizing and practicing type of environmentally friendly design, application possibility of modern fashion design as unique, practical and environment-conscious expression is identified through deviate from general common idea which is organic cotton material or recycled clothes.
And it is my sincere hope that efficient and creative methods that can apply sustainable design to fashion design will be constantly developed through multi faceted research and analysis on sustainable design as well as in depth studies in connection with other industries or artistic fields.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

올해 환경위기시계는 9시31분을 가르켜 ‘인류 생존 불가능’을 뜻하는 시점인 12시에 더욱 가까워졌다. 환경에 대한 위기의식을 느끼면서 친환경에 대한 관심과 개개인의 의식도 또한 높아지고 있으며 각 분야에서 구체적인 대책방안을 마련, 실천하고 있다. 디자인 분야에서도 친환경 디자인, 그린 디자인, 에코 디자인, 지속 가능한 디자인 등의 명칭을 통해 개괄적으로 표현, 발전되고 있다. 특히 지속 가능한 디자인은 환경을 인식한 트렌드를 바탕으로 건강과 지속적인 삶을 추구하는 친환경적이고 합리적인 생활유형을 의미하는 LOHAS(Lifestyle of Health and Sustainability)족의 출현과 함께 등장한 21세기의 친환경 디자인 개념이다.
친환경 패션과 관련된 연구는 20세기 말에 등장한 에콜로지를 중심으로 히피, 에스닉, 자연주의, 그린 디자인의 재활용 등의 테마로 나누어 연구된 선행사례가 대다수이며, 그 후 느리게 살기 경향과 웰빙 패션에 관한 연구로 이어지고 있다.
이렇듯 친환경 디자인에 관한 선행 연구와 친환경 패션에 관한 연구는 계속되고 있으나 시대의 흐름에 따라 그 표현 유형이 변화되고 있으며, 웰빙 패션 이후 순환성과 지속가능성(Sustainability)을 토대로 한 21세기의 친환경 디자인의 유형연구는 부족한 실정이다.
이러한 시점에서 본 연구에서는 의식화되고 있는 친환경 디자인의 이론적인 개념 및 전개 특성을 정립하고, 각 요소들이 현대 디자인계와 패션계에 어떠한 영향을 끼치고 있는지를 고찰하여 자연과 환경의 보존 및 순환을 강조하는 21세기의 친환경 디자인을 배경으로 제품의 라이프사이클 즉 생산, 사용 및 폐기단계의 전 과정에서 제품수명의 장기화, 기능주의적 및 재활용, 재사용되는 패션 디자인의 실천 방안을 제안하는 것을 목적으로 한다.
이를 위해 국내외의 관련문헌과 선행연구, 인터넷 정보를 통한 친환경 디자인의 개념 및 특성연구를 바탕으로 네 가지 표현유형으로 나누어 이론적 배경을 고찰할 수 있었고, 친환경 패션의 전개 및 흐름을 바탕으로 한 경향을 최근 발표된 패션 작품들을 위주로 분석하고 그 조형성 및 표현재료와 기법에서 나타나는 특성을 고찰하여 8벌의 여성복을 디자인, 제작하였다.
이와 같은 연구의 결과로 이론 연구에 있어서는 다음의 결과를 얻었다.
첫째, 친환경 디자인의 실천은 의식되어지고, 특정 계층에서만 노력한다고 되는 것이 아니라 생산, 소비 폐기의 전 과정에서 소비자, 생산자, 정부 및 사회단체에서 모두 조화를 이루어 제품의 생명주기가 연장되고 한번 쓰고 버리는 것이 아니라 순환될 수 있는 사이클을 이룰 수 있도록 해야 한다. 또한 이러한 친환경적 요소와 더불어 근본적으로 흐르는 사회 윤리적 의식이 근간이 되어야 한다.
둘째, 친환경 디자인은 감량화 디자인(Reduce Design)에서 클래식과 단순화된 디자인(Classic & simple), 재디자인(Redesign)에서 재사용과 재활용(Reuse & Re-cycle), 트랜스포머블 디자인(Transformable Design)은 다기능과 멀티스타일링(Multi functional & Multi styling), 소재경향으로 미래 신소재(Future-Eco mate-rial)의 유형의 요소를 기반으로 다양한 기법으로 의상 디자인에 표현 할 수 있다.
이를 바탕으로 한 작품제작을 통해 얻은 결론은 다음과 같다.
첫째, 친환경적 디자인의 개념과 유형의 특성을 응용하여 의상 디자인에 적용함으로써 친환경에 대한 의식을 극대화할 수 있었으며, 미래적이고 합리적인 디자인으로 표현영역의 확장을 이루었다.
둘째, 폐기되어지는 메인라벨들, 재단 후 남은 원단 조각, 일상에서 버려지는 장식리본을 재사용·재활용한 새로운 디자인 소재와 미래적인 친환경소재를 바탕으로 언밸런스한 절개라인과 수공예적인 패치워크나 퀼팅의 방법을 통해 의상을 제작하여 에크루·빈티지적 느낌의 친환경패션에 국한되는 것이 아니라 스타일리시한 미래적 디자인으로 표현 수 있었다.
셋째, 착용 후 다른 의복으로 재구성할 수 있는 패턴을 디자인의 디테일로 구성하여 폐기 시 재활용의 메시지를 제시하거나, 리버서블 가능한 소재와 옷의 구조적 특징을 통해 한 벌의 의복으로 다양하게 연출 가능하도록 하여 옷의 수명을 길게하여 환경오염을 줄이는 친환경 디자인의 개념을 표현, 개성적이고 새로운 미적 가치를 부여할 수 있는 의상디자인의 원천임을 확인하였다.
이와 같이 친환경적 디자인의 유형을 인식하고 실천함으로써, 기존의 유기농 면소재의 의복 혹은 재활용된 의복이라는 일반적인 통념에서 탈피시켜 환경을 의식함과 동시에 독창적이고 실용적인 표현방법으로 현대 의상디자인의 적용 가능성을 확인하였으며, 아울러 앞으로 친환경 디자인에 대한 다각적인 연구와 분석 또한 다른 산업 및 예술 영역과 연계한 심도 있고 계속적인 연구를 통하여 의상 디자인에 적용할 수 있는 효율적이고 창조적인 방법이 다양하게 개발되었으면 하는 바람이다.
