The culture industry today, scaled amid remarkable development of national economy and consumer economy and progress of contents technology, has been activated in various fields of performance, movie, broadcasting, record, and publishing. With such development of culture industry, intellectual level of people has been enhanced, which results in sharp increase of investment in themselves and a growing number of people enjoying performance in an effort to spend their leisure time positively.
Costume making in performance arts, as one of the areas of stage design seeking for common value, is specialized creation for specifically play, dancing, musical, opera, and concert. Therefore, stage costume sometimes limits or neglects practically and functionality in search of aesthetic value. Among other stage costumes, the one specialized for musical performance should give deep impression and fun to the audience, by creating aesthetic beauty considering functionality. Currently, with the growing number of varied and activated musical performances, there is a need for more advanced stage art to meet desires of audience, together with new attempts and creative efforts for development at various levels of artistic circles for this purpose.
This study is to develop the design of costume for musical performance, based on the theme of ‘echo,’ which is associated with echo of strings of violin at a concert hall vibrating and resonating, serving as a medium to help the performer and the audience share each other’s feeling.
As the subject of this study, costume for musical performance worn by players of a violin among other stringed instruments was chosen. Considering characteristics of instruments and playing postures, the study sought to develop and suggest more creative and newer costume for musical performance design, which considers functionality and emphasizes aesthetic aspects by research and development on the theme. In methodology, focusing on violins among other stringed instruments, literature research, analysis on present situation of violin design, general analysis on characteristics and visual image of the theme ‘echo’, and empirical study and creation of artwork on the basis of case study on figurative art based on the perception of visual image of echo were conducted.
Echo, the theme of this study, is a physical phenomenon or a sound itself returning after hit by something, which happens by waves having repeated and continuous attributes. Waves leave different visual after images depending on conditions and changes of the medium, and the study chose motif images implying these images found from natural phenomena around us, by embodying such visual after images into shapes. The case study of figurative art revealed that visual images of waves showing different shapes depending on media appear together as organic patterns having rhythm and dynamic beauty. Based on the previous discussions, design development process was planned systematically, and costume for musical performance fit to violin players was studies and developed using the motif for design development.
This development of artwork is based on the theme of echo, with the aim of proposing a systematic design development method, which is intended to offer potentials for design development of various materials and encourage willingness to develop various creative designs of costume for musical performance. Innovative attempts and willingness of development is expected to help activate costume for musical performance market and contribute to the progress of performance art culture.
