The process of modernization, from the late 19th century to the early 20th century, was the period which broke down pre-modern social order and pursued reformation to build modern society. The process of modernization influenced not only political, social, and economic affairs but also cultural affairs, and the world of art developed while talking on a new aspect different from pervious era. Therefore, the study on the history of painting in this period needs to reflect such revised aspects. The wave of modernization in economyin the period of the process of modernization changed the concept of monetary system, and allowed people to come to recognize painting and calligraphy as products which had economy values under the influence of modernization. The expansion of business districts and the development of commercial stores started from 18th century led to establish the spaces for circulating the modern meanings of paintings and calligraphies in the late 19th century. Under the circumstances, professional spaces for circulating painting and calligraphy made it possible to purchase and possess paintings and calligraphies more active more actively.
Reminding that advertisement in newspapers targets on unspecified people, although people had not a profound knowledge of art, people who were interested in art, and had extra money to enjoy art, could enjoy and posses their desirable paintings and calligraphies through the spaces for circulating paintings and calligraphies. Establishing the spaces for circulating paintings and calligraphies in the period of the process of modernization flourished with the enjoyment of paintings and calligraphies, and the expansion of patronage sprung up in the late 18th century. The regions which represent these aspects are located through Cheonggyecheon, Gwangtonggyo(淸溪川 廣通橋 一帶). So to speak, there were professional painters and the specialized spaces for circulating paintings and calligraphies produced by them, and patrons who supported the painters and purchased their works around the area of Gwangtonggyo.
Around the area of Gwangtonggyo in 1414, Ji-Jun(紙廛, a paper goods shop in a market place), a traditional space for circulating paintings and calligraphies was set up and sold a variety of paintings and calligraphies, and this tradition of circulating paintings and calligraphies was the matrix of establishing the modern meaning of the spaces for circulating paintings and calligraphies. The primary form of sale spaces set up around the area of Gwangtonggyo was substituted for Seo-Hwa-Po(書畵舖) and Seo-Hwa-Gwan(書畵舘), modern meaning of the spaces for circulating paintings and calligraphies, an educational institute for paintings and calligraphies at the beginning of the late 19th century. In addition, exhibitions(展覽會) and presentations(揮毫會) were frequently held around the area, and also they seemed to play an active role as the spaces for circulating paintings and calligraphies. The spaces for circulating paintings and calligraphies set up around the area of Gwangtonggyo expanded to the whole areas in Gangbuk(江北) in Seoul and spreaded across the areas of Pyongyang(平壤), Daegu(大邱), Gunsan(群山), and etc in the late 19th century and the early 20th century.
On the other hand, the area around Gwangtonggyo was the co-existing trading areas of Joseon(朝鮮), Chung(淸,) and Japan(日本), and Se-Gu-Ji(世居地, a residential area from generation to generation) for Gi-Sul-Jik Jung-In(技術職 中人, technical and administrative workers living in the center of Seoul). The features of the area around Gwangtonggyo as an international commercial city sparked the introduction of foreign painting styles and the consumption, and the fact that technical workers had been the center of the patrons for paintings and calligraphies made it possible to support paintings and calligraphies actively. In addition, in the area, Chang Seung-Up(張承業, 1843-1897) performed great works at an atelier. Chang Seung-Up influenced other painting styles by associating with painters of those days, and Jung Hak-Kyo(丁學敎, 1832-1914), Kim Yeong(金瑛, 1837-unknown), An Choong-Sik(安中植, 1861-1919), Cho Seok-Jin(趙錫晋, 1853-1920) and etc were the painters who worked with Chang Seung-Up. The total number of patrons reached 50 including most rich individuals. In that degree, it is understandable that wealth was the most critical factor in enjoying paintings and calligraphies and supporting painters. As the matter of supporting painting and calligraphy, the increasing role of wealth became a more critical factor by establishing the spaces for circulating paintings and calligraphies.
As a result of examining patrons'' purchasing attitudes through the documents related the works produced by Chang Seung-Up and other painters who associated with him and influenced each other''s painting style, the genres of paintings from those painters were landscape Paintings, figure paintings, flower-and-bird paintings, birds-and-animals paintings, fishes-and-crabs paintings, painting of celadons and broken-stemmed flowers(器皿折枝畵), Jap-Hwa-Byung(雜畵屛, various kinds of paintings in folding screens), the painting of the four gracious plants(四君子), rocks paintings(怪石圖) and etc. The genre of paintings(畵目) prevalent at that time is classified into five categories among those genres.
Firstly, Oh Gyeong-Seok(吳慶錫, 1831-1879), the family pedigree of Hae-ju Oh including Oh Gyeong-Yeon(吳慶然, 1841-unknown), Oh Sae-Chang(吳世昌, 1864-1953), and etc played a key role in the production and prevalence of painting of celadon and broken-stemmed flowers. The individuals who enjoyed easels and flower paintings except the family pedigree of Hae-ju Oh(海州吳氏) were the persons who associated with Oh Sae-Chang or were interested in collecting Ko-Dong Seo-Hwa(古董書畵).
Secondly, Real Landscape Painting(實景山水畵) were preferred to individuals who supported civilizing.
Thirdly, social status played an essential role in purchasing Bang-Jak(倣作). People of high officials enjoyed a variety of painting styles of painters in China or works through their works, and it is interesting to notice that Yukgyo Poetic Gathering Dong In(六橋詩社 同人) of Jung-In(中人, middle-class men) asked Hua Yan(華嵒, 1682~1756) among Bang-Jak.
Fourthly, there is a significant difference between the introduction of Four Wang''s Landscape Painting Style(四王風''s 山水畵) during the Qing period and enjoyment. Although Yeok-Gwan(譯官, officials in charge of interpretation and translation) who made trips to Chung and played a leading role in the introduction of four wang''s landscape painting style, the majority of people who enjoyed it were high officers or Japanese in Korea. It is estimated that Han-Ue-Yeok-Gwan(漢語譯官, officers in charge of interpretating Chinese in business) could possess lots of Four Wang''s Landscape Painting Style by Yeon-Haeng(燕行, envoy''s trip to Beijing in China).
Lastly, the paintings of Taoism and Buddhism, paintings of celadon and broken-stemmed flowers, and birds-and-animals paintings, were added to flowering glass and flowers and birds painting in folding screens in a folding screen with various paintings prevalent in Shanghai(上海). Therefore, a folding screen with various painting was the folding screen that each genre of paintings was painted on each space and the folding screen consisted of each painting. It is understandable that the genre acquired popularity because the genre of paintings included relatively various statuses and frequently appeared in picture documents of modern time.
The painting style of Chang Seung-Up who worked actively based on the area of Gwangtonggyo influenced the painting styles of An Jung-Sik, his disciple, and Cho Jin-Suk and their painting styles led to their disciples including Yi Sang-Bom(李象範, 1897-1972), Roh Su-Hyon(盧壽鉉, 1899-1978), Pyon Kwan-Shik(卞寬植, 1899-1976), Yi Yong-Wu(李用雨, 1902-1953), and others. Lee Sang-Bum, Nho Su-Hyun, Byeon Gwan-Sik, and Lee Yong-Wo organized Dong-yeon-sa in March 1923 and tried to reform traditional painting styles. Their efforts to break down traditional painting styles were expressed through their works. Thus, the fact that the change of painting styles and modernization of genre of paintings were developed by An Jung-Sik, a disciple of Chang Seung-Up, and the painters led by An Jung-Sik reminds of Chang Seoung-Up who worked based on the area of Gwangtonggyo in the period of the process of modernization and of the importance of the study on the painters who had associated with Chang Seoung-Up.
In short, the area of Gwangtonggyo was the traditional space for circulating painting and calligraphy. in the late 19th century, modern meaning of the space for circulating paintings and calligraphies was fully established, the space became the main stage and the base of Chang Seoung-Up who led the world of artists at the end of the Joseon period and the modern period, and the place where his disciples; Ahn Jung-Sik and Cho Suk-Jin worked by coming and going. Ahn Jung-Sik and Cho Suk-Jin were the masters of painters who led the modern world of artists and the patrons including Chang Seoung-Up and other painters who associated with him were well-known patrons of painting and calligraphy in those days.
Through the study on the patron of the world of artists and painting activities in the period of the process of modernization, we understand Chang Seoung-Up who participated in the modern space for circulating painting and calligraphy which expanded to the whole area of Gangbuk in Seoul and circulating painting and calligraphy activities and played an active role based on the area of Gwangtonggyo and other painters including Jung Hak-Kyo, Kim Young, Ahn Jung-Sik, Cho Suk-Jin and others and patrons who worked in Nagwon-dong, Dangju-dong, and Myunglyun-dong and accociated with Chang Seoung-Up, and through the study on the aspect of patrons'' purchasing attitudes, we are able to examine the outlines of the genre produced and prevalent in those days, the reasons of establishing painting styles, the formation and prevalence of paintings of celadon and broken-stemmed flowers, the production of real landscape paintings, Bang-Jak which Chang Seoung-Up particularly produced a lot, the demand of the style of Four Wangs in landscape paintings, and the formation and prevalence of Jap-Hwa-Byung.
This study is meaningful to apply a new methodology to the world of artists in the period of the process of modernization by examining painting and calligraphy activities in the process of modernization such as the production, patron, and circulation of the process of modernization.
