This study aims at inquiring into the book mounting (粧䌙) and preservation of the books kept by Royal family members of the Joseon dynasty, investigating the samples of Seonwon gyebo giryak (璿源系譜紀略) and Gukjo bogam (國朝寶鑑). In Joseon dynasty, the book mounting was generally called as Janghwang (粧䌙). Jangchaek (粧冊) means the binding and the number of books composed of a set of volumes, while the book mounting refers to the shapes and materials of book binding.
In order to strengthen the royal authority, Kings Sukjong, Yeongjo and Jeongjo compiled the genealogical books of Joseon royal family and the documents of predecessors', by publishing a series of royal books such as Seonwon gyebo giryak, Yeolseong eoje (列聖御製), Yeolseong jijang tonggi (列聖誌狀通紀), Gukjo bogam. Among them, Seonwon gyebo giryak and Gukjo bogam were perceived as models for Joseon royal books in terms of book mounting, presenting to king, enshrining, and preserving them.
Artisans belonging to the miscellaneous position (雜職) of Gyoseo gwan (校書館, Office of Royal Publishing) were in charge of royal book mounting, who were called book binding artisans (粧冊匠) or book artisans (冊匠).
Book artisans who bound and mounted Seonwon gyebo giryak under King Yeongjo were Park Yu-shin (朴有信), Jo Chan-seong (趙贊成), Yi Hu-seong (李厚成), Yi Ji-seong (李枝成). All of those were belonged to the Office of Royal Publishing. Gyojeong cheong (校正廳), one of the branches of Jongbusi (宗簿寺), summoned book artisans from Hullryoun dogam (訓鍊都 監) or Buddhist monk army in Bukhan Mt. Fortress (北漢山城) when the number of book artisans from the Office of Royal Publishing was limited. The tools of book designing used by book artisans included table (床), scissors board (剪板), bowl, piling, and pasting goods, and those were supplied by each office and returned to on the end of book designing works.
The enshrinement versions of Seonwon gyebo giryak during the reign of King Yeongjo (1724~1776) had been covered by Namdae dan (藍大緞, indigo blue silk sheet) before the publication of Geummun samok (禁紋事目) in 1746. After the publication, most royal books was covered by Jingam pyoyu (眞藍表紬), Nammunun hwabangyu (藍無紋花方紬), and Nambang sayu (藍方絲紬). As the materials of book clothes were changed, the materials for title (標題) and boundary of the title (題目縇) also were changed. As for the paper clothes of the Seonwon gyebo giryak for enshrinement, artisans first dyed thin paper (草注紙) with yellow dyeing solution (黃染水) and placed it on wooden-floral-patterned plate (菱花板), then workers called as Neunghwa chujogun (菱花推造軍) rubbled it to represent the floral pattern (菱花紋), using a yellow handle (黃蜜). Pihwi ji (被諱紙), other term is Yeolseong eohwi Bucheom (列聖御諱 付籤), small sized-paper that covers king's name and sobriquet, was made by piling and pasting the back sheet of Hongbang sayu (紅方絲紬) with Jeoju ji (楮注紙, mulberry paper). In binding thread of Seonwon gyebo giryak, red-colored thread, Hongjin sa (紅眞絲) was used for all editions mostly.
The number of book designing and the book covering materials of Gukjobo gam varied with the enshrinement versions such as the Royal Worshipping Shrine (宗廟), the Local National Archives (史庫), presenting-to-king and bestowing-from-king. As for Gukjobogam kept in each room of the Royal Worshipping Shrine, their main and supplemented volumes were combined and mounted together. The Gukjobogam kept in the Shrine in 1782 and 1848 was covered by 藍禾花紬 (indigo rice blossom silk) for book clothes, Baekgwang jeok (白廣的) for title and 紅禾花紬 (red rice blossom silk) for Honghyeop (紅挾) and Sukdong pyeoncheol (熟銅 編 鐵). However, for the Gukjobogam kept in the Shrine in 1909, book clothes were changed to 黃禾花紬 (yellow rice blossom silk) and the title was made with 白禾花紬 (white rice blossom silk). Such a change was caused by King Gojong's enthronement as the Emperor of 'Deahan Empire', because he could use yellow color as the imperial symbol.
After book covering was completed, Seonwon gyebo giryak and Gukjo bogam were placed in wooden box. Since King Yeongjo ordered to determine the size of box according to the sizes of the books, all the boxes had been made to match the Royal oder. For the wooden box containing Gukjo bogam enshrined in each room of the Shrine, various sized boxes as for one volume, two volumes, three volumes, four volumes, and six volumes were produced. The inside of the box was colored with 倭朱紅 (distinctively red dyestuff) and the outside, 黑眞漆 (high-quality japanning). When the making boxes was finished, the containing ceremony (封裹式) was conducted, that Gukjo bogam volumes were put into the box and wrapped it up.
Seonwon gyebo giryak was honorarily kept in the Pavilion of Royal Genealogy (璿源閣) in accordance with the Rules to Enshrine Royal Pedigree Folding Plates and Royal Genealogical Books (御牒璿源錄奉安時事 目) in 1702. In 1782, King Jeongjo enshrined to the Royal Worshipping Shrine in person according to the norm to register into book thesaurus. Enshrining Gukjo bogam in the Shrine is to reveal the flourishing virtues of successive kings and proclaim the orthodoxy of Royal throne . In the Gukjo bogam enshrinement parade toward the Shrine, the guards and official bands led the parade from the head and colored palanquins for valuable goods (彩轝) and the soul of the dead(腰輿) in which Gukjo bogam was contained, the symbol of King and Royal family, followed them.
Joseon Royal family established the regulations about ritual salutation, maintenance, drying to preserve the enshrined books forever and maintained the enshrining places and books. They also repaired the enshrining places and equipped fire-ceasing devices to prepare the occurrences of fire and flood disasters. When a Chambong (參奉), government official who guarded the National Local Archive (史庫), found problems about the Archive, he sent Munjang (文狀, document) to Busa (府 使, district magistrate). Busa arrived the Archive, checked out the reported items in person, and then sent Cheopjeong (牒呈, report) to Gamsa (監司). Gamsa reported it to King in Janggye (狀啓) and King let Jongbusi know. Then, Jongbusi submitted Gyemoon (啓文), according to the King's sanction, in oder to receive royal permission to send Nangcheong (郎廳) and to examine the Archive.
The main reason for the repair and rebuilding of the Archive was rainy spells and dust storms. When the Archive was repaired or rebuilt, the enshrined books were taken out and moved to temporary enshrining place (移安處), then returned to the Archive after the repair or reconstruction.
On enshrining the Gynecological Books or repairing the Archive, the enshrined books were showered by daylight. In case of winter exposure, the enshrined books were placed in underfloor-heating (ondol) room and heated to dry. In 1661, the head official of Bonghwa Prefecture furnished hoes (大錁伊), shovels (加羅), rakes (小是郞), broadaxes (大斧子), hooks (乬 擧金) and scythe (鐱子) for fire ceasing. Those ironwares were for pulling down the building to prevent fire from spreading further.
The books enshrined by the Royal Family of Joseon dynasty were covered with the highest quality materials and techniques and preserved under the management system including ritual salutation, maintenance, enshrinement, daylight showering, enshrining place repair and fire-ceasing devices equipment, so that they can be handed down until now. This paper examines the historical processes of the Royal Family's enshrined books, from book coverings to preservation, and their actual circumstances in Joseon dynasty.
