• In our Korean society, as the number of women participating in economic and social activities increases and the family structure changes, Thus, child-rearing has become the most important issue
• that everyone is concerned about and determining the future of our society. Now, the Korean society requires professional nursery (edu-
• care) teachers for quality daycare of children, because our children should be reared in an environment quite different from our traditional society.
• In our modern society, the nursery facilities affect younger children''s intellectual, emotional and social development importantly. Hence, it is required of the nursery school to help the younger children live an emotionally sound and stable life in a more desirable educational environment than their homes and help them develop their mind and body in a sound and healthy way.
• For quality nursery services, the physical environment is important but, what are more important before everything else is professional and able daycare teachers. For they are in the primary contact with the children, while affecting them directly. So, status and roles of daycare teachers are important factors affecting the quality of the nursery services. In other words, however good daycare environment our younger children are placed in, daycare quality would be poor if it could not provide for useful programs reflecting children''s developmental needs and interests or could not communicate effectively with their mothers and therefore, could not be trusted by them.
• Given the conception that the daycare teachers as subjects of child care play important roles in influencing children''s whole personality, while teach them on the fields, importance of retraining them to enhance their quality cannot be too much emphasized. For the daycare teachers are obliged to not only protect and educate younger children but also provide for the total services encompassing parents'' education and counselling.
• As it is, it is essential to improve their working conditions. The reality is, however, that they are overloaded with heavy burden, suffering from lower pay level. Namely, quality daycare teachers cannot well be recruited in such poor working conditions. In addition, under the current daycare system and budget, treatment of daycare teachers may not well be improved. In other words, kindergarten operators cannot afford to recruit able daycare teachers due to the poor budget.
• Accordingly, it is deemed urgent to train and educate professional and able daycare teachers, while improving their treatment, in order to take care of our younger children effectively. To do so, it is necessary to improve their working conditions and relieve them of workload with the increased subsidies from the government. In particular, it is essential to raise not only their overtime allowances but also their basic pay level and thereby, enhance their job satisfaction and attract more able daycare teachers.
• The purpose of this study was to survey the daycare teachers for their working conditions and workload and thereby, analyze the factors affecting their view of early childhood education, personality and corporal conditions, working conditions and workload as well as their job satisfaction, and thereby, suggest some policy alternatives to improve their working conditions and reform our daycare services.
