Because 2007 is the 15th anniversary of the renewal of Chinese and South Korean diplomatic relations, China and South Korea declared 2007 "A Year of Open Exchange", between their countries. What has Korean Wave been contributing to diplomatic relations and socio-economic development of these countries? What are the limits of Korean Wave to expand beyond the realm of pop culture and into the world’s social fiber?
This thesis attempts to take a new point of view to examine Korean Wave’s sub-categories; celebrities, pop music, cuisine, television dramas, motion pictures and fashion. Additionally, which sub-category of Korean Wave has the most impact in China is explored. Finally, how Korean Wave affected the Korean national image, tourism and product marketability is evaluated.
The thesis explains that the major types of Korean Wave influencing positively on Korean national image can be four; "celebrities, movies, fashion, and cuisine". On the other hand, the above mentioned "television dramas" and "pop music" do not affect on the national image directly. However, the thesis indicates those two types of Korean Wave, "television dramas and pop music", have a positive impact on each intention of purchasing Korean products, and visiting Korea.
Korean Wave’s fashion, cuisine, movies and television dramas have an effect on Korean visiting intention as well. The attitude of Korean Wave can exercise positive influence on intention of visiting Korea and it continues to hands-on experience of Korean Wave’s cultural products. Also, the study signifies that those categories, such as "fashion", "food", "celebrities" and "pop music", exert a favorable influence on purchase intention toward Korean products.
The Intercultural fever, Korean Wave, has brought an enormous profit to Korean economy. Increasing sales of products which are related to primary industries at the center of Korean Wave, such as pop music records and movie, can be perceived as one of the direct economic effects of Korean Wave. In addition, customers’ interests and feeling of satisfaction of Korean products have been enhanced through more exposures of Korean cars, cell phones, apparels, and electric home appliances shown on Korean TV programs and commercials. Moreover, it is true that numerous companies have obtained excellent results by promoting its products with the Korean Wave marketing strategies.
