The purpose of this study was to investigate differences in life satisfaction, happiness and belief among types of religious orientation.
Hypotheses of this study were as follows. Hypothesis Ⅰ: They are some types of religious orientation according to combination of religious orientation dimensions.
Hypothesis Ⅰ-1: Religious orientation will be consist of 3 sub factors : intrinsic, extrinsic and quest dimension.
Hypothesis Ⅰ-2: They are several types of religious orientation according to combination of religious orientation dimensions.
Hypothesis Ⅱ: It will be expected that these groups have differences in personal religious life (tithes, frequency of church attendance, prayer behavior), belief (belief in the afterlife, death anxiety), personal happiness and satisfaction with life.
Hypothesis Ⅱ-1: Life Satisfaction would score higher on high intrinsic orientation.
Hypothesis Ⅱ-2: Death anxiety would score higher on high extrinsic orientation.
Hypothesis Ⅱ-3: Belief in the afterlife would score higher on high intrinsic orientation and high quest orientation.
Hypothesis Ⅱ-4: Happiness would score higher on high quest orientation.
Participants for this study were 413 (192 males and 221 females) Protestant adults. The average of their age was 31.84(SD=11.88). Data for this study were obtained from nation-wide survey. Questionnaires were given to 500 Protestant adults and 432 of were returned. 19 inefficient questionnaires discarded , then 413 of them were used for the final analyses.
The questionnaire was consist of 5 scales:
Religious Orientation(47 items), Oxford Happiness(29 items), Life Satisfaction (5 items), Belief in the Afterlife(10 items) and death anxiety(15 items). The construct validity of this questionnaire was tested by factor analysis. And for reliability coefficients of each subscale were calculated by Cronbach's coefficients. Collected data were analyzed using a SPSS 13.0 for Win. Statistical methods used for this study were Cluster Analysis and One way-ANOVA.
Main results of this study were as follows:
First, 4 types of religious orientation were obtained by combination of the religious dimensions. Thus HypothesisⅠ was supported.
Second, patterns of relationship between types and personal religion life, belief , personal happiness and satisfaction with life were different. Hypothesis Ⅱ was supported also.
