This is a descriptive research to examine the levels of Health condition, Depression and Quality of life of in the Elderly, the relations among the factors.
The subjects selected for the survey are the 441 elderly in Seoul and Gyung-gi province. The survey period was from July 10, 2006 to October 30, 2006, and through the face-to-face questionnaire.
As a tool of measurement of health condition I used CMI(the simplified table for checking health condition), for which Nam Ho-Chang improvised Cornell Medical Index by Brodman(1951).
As a tool of measurement of the pattern of depression I used GDS, for which Ki beak -seak standarded Geriatric depression scale by Yesavage 등(1986).
As a tool of measurement of quality of life, I adopted SF-36(Short Form-36: Wares & Sherbourne, 1993).
The information gathered, through SAS/PC11.0, calculated the general characteristics and percentage of the health condition, depression and quality of life of these older people and through the utilization of Pearson Correlation was possible to check the level of health, depression and quality of life of the examined. For the comparison of each characteristic’s difference was employed the T-test and ANOVA.
The results of the analysis are as following:
(1) The general characteristics of the analysis showed that the elderly aged 65 to 69 (44.4%) by age, female (73.5%) by sex, graduation of elementary school (55.6%) by school career, housewife (42.0%) by past job, no job (84.3%) by present job, his or her own house (67.6%) by dwelling, over 200 thousand won (38.3%) by monthly expense, being(91.6%) by child, by his or her own (43.8%) by living expense.
(2) According to the level of pattern of the health condition, the depression and the quality of life, the pattern of the health condition average 1.75, which indicate being moderately. depression average 2.85 and the quality of life 2.72, which indicate being low.
(3) In regard to correlation among the pattern of the health condition, depression and quality of life, direct-proportional correlation between the pattern of the health condition and depression (r=.440, p=.000), and between the pattern of the health condition and the quality of life (r=-.611, p=.000), and between the pattern of the depression and the quality of life (r=-.591, p=.000), which indicates that the better condition of heath is related with the higher quality of life.
(4) The health condition of showed a statistically significant difference according to age (F=3.5, P=.001), sex((t=-2.89, P=.000), school career(F=6.30, P=.000), past job(F=3.93, P=.000), present job(t=-2.78, P=.000), dwelling pattern(F=3.19, P=000), monthly expense(F=2.08, P=.031), child being(t=0.20, p=000), living expense (F=3.95, P=.007).
(5) The depression of showed a statistically significant difference according to age(F=3.03, P=.000), school career(F=7.52, P=.000), past job(F=3.06, P=.002), present job(t=-1.47, P=.000), dwelling pattern(F=5.28, P=000), monthly expense(F=11.45, P=.000), child being(t=1.31, p=000), living expense (F=6.27,P=.000).
(6) The quality of life showed a statistically significant difference according to age(F=7.09, P=.000), sex((t=1.95, P=.000), school career(F=11.72, P=.000), past job(F=4.7, P=.000), present job(t=3.11, P=.000), dwelling pattern(F=2.05, P=.011), monthly expense(F=6.12, P=.000), living expense (F=6.27, P=.000).
Through this results it’s been possible to determine that the health condition of the older people examined was good, depression level was high compared to the average level and the quality of life was normal. These three points are correlated and the mission of the nurses is to lower or maintain the levels of depression, health and quality of life. It’s requested a special attention of the current job level of older people since it was confirmed that the quality of life and depression are related to each other.
