The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship of the computer-game addiction of school children in the upper grades, their peer relations, self-control and communication style with parents. The subjects in this study were 558 elementary schoolers. A survey was conducted to evaluate their computer-game addiction and to look for correlation among their computer-game addiction, self-control, peer relations and communication with parents.
For data handling, SPSS 12.0 program was employed, and frequency analysis, reliability analysis, t-test, correlational analysis and stepwise multiple regression analysis were implemented.
The findings of the study were as follows:
First, whether their grade made any differences to their computer- game addiction level was investigated, and the fourth, fifth and sixth graders got a mean of 32.09, 29.55 and 30.54 respectively. So the fourth graders scored highest in computer-game addiction, followed by the sixth graders and fifth graders. Their academic year made no significant difference to their computer-game addiction level. By gender, however, the boys and girls got a mean of 33.55 and 27.95 respectively, which showed the former was significantly more addicted than the latter.
Second, whether their computer-game addiction level made any differences to their self-control, peer relations and communication style with parents was checked, and those who were more addicted to the computer lagged far behind in terms of short-term control. The students who were more addicted didn't fare well with peers. As a result of evaluating their communication with fathers and mothers separately, those who were more hooked onto games communicated with both of their fathers and mothers in a more negative manner.
Third, as for the impact of general characteristics, self-control, peer relations and communication style with parents on computer-game addiction, the students were under the significantly negative influence of gender, self-control and communication level with fathers and mothers in that regard. Those who were boys and who communicated with fathers and mothers in a more negative way were significantly more addicted to computer games. But peer relationship had no significant impact on that.
It's attempted in the study to check into how children's computer addiction, peer relations, self-control and communication style with parents were tied into one another in order to have a better psychological understanding of young computer-game addicts, as the spread of the Internet had children enjoy computer games without any restraints. And the findings of the study suggested that peer relations, self-control and communication style with parents should be considered important for child counseling in relation to computer-game addiction. Based on the findings of the study, the implications of the study were discussed, and what future research efforts should focus on was suggested.
