A. The purpose of this study
The purpose of this research is to understand and analyze the various factors of dropout students on the presumption that dropouts are a result of multiple problems such as household, school, the students themselves, and various social problems.
To achieve this purpose, the questions that this study addressed were as follows;
First, How do the students' internal factors cause their dropouts?
Second, How do the external factors such as family background, one's behavior in and out of the school, the school system, the local community, and one's social systems cause a dropout?
B. The Methods of this study
The survey method was taken randomly from 288 dropout students from 7 qualification exam preparation schools, 2 juvenile homes, and 4 youth shelters in Daejeon, Korea. The statistical methods used for data analysis of the study were ANOVA, t-test, and correlations analysis by SPSSwin 12.0K
C. The Result of the Study
The results are as follows;
First, this study examined academic achievements as one of several factors causing dropouts. The students were more prone to internet games, adult media materials, and sexual relationships, which showed that they had a hard time catching up in school. It caused them to lose interest so they started skipping school and even ran away from home.
Second, this study examined the external factors such as family background. As a result, the study showed that the death of a parent, their divorce, or separtion had a great effect on the student's dropout rate. Especially students with unhealthy relationships with their parents had a higher chance of dropout but relationships with other students and teachers, financial problems, psychological value system, size of school, coedcation school, local community systems, and environment of one's residential area had no direct effect for dropping out.
Third, students with religion seemed to have positive relationships with their parents and showed less smoked or drank. Male students showed more positive self-consciousness than female students. It is because boys are more active.
Fourth, the overall rate of dropout is decreasing but its number is still high. Most of the students dropped out in their first year of high school. The number of dropouts in vocational high schools is much higher than in academic high schools which require a measure.
