This study is conducted to understand the relationship between the self-regulated learning of elementary school students and the learning support behaviors of their parents. To do this, the differences in the perceptions of students and parents about the learning support behaviors were searched. Also the relationship between the self-regulated learning of students and the learning support behaviors of their parents was analyzed, and the perceptional differences of students about the features and degree of the self-regulated learning of students were compared on the base of the differences in the perceptions of students and parents about the learning support behaviors.
The research questions are; (1) what is the relationship between the self-regulated learning of elementary school students and the learning support behaviors of their parents? (2) If there are the differences in the perceptions of students and parents about the learning support behaviors, are there any relations between them on the self-regulated learning of elementary school students?
The subjects are 5th grade students in S elementary school located in Daejeon and the size of sample was 283. The learning support behaviors of parents were measured by a questionnaire used in a study conducted by Moon, Eunsik and Kim, Chungwhoi (2003). In order to investigate the feature and degree of self-regulated learning a questionnaire developed by Choi ookyong (2006) was used.
In order to find out the relationship between the self-regulated learning of elementary school students and the learning support behaviors of their parents, correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis are performed. And for comparing the differences in the self-regulated learning of students on the basis of the differences in the perceptions of students and parents about the learning support behaviors the Scheffe test was done.
The results are as follows.
First, the learning support behaviors of parents have a meaningful positive correlation with the self-regulated learning of students. The correlation(r=.504, p<.001) between the self-regulated learning and the learning support behaviors of parents perceived by students is showed to be higher than the correlation(r=.273, p<.001) between the self-regulated learning and those perceived by parents. Specifically, the learning support behaviors are correlated with the cognition, meta-cognition, and motivation of students in order of highness. There are three types of learning support behaviors, it is revealed that family-based and family-school interaction support behaviors have influence upon the self-regulated learning, which has 28% explanatory power on the whole variance. However, school-based support behaviors have no meaningful effect on the self-regulated learning.
Second, with regard to the difference between students and their parents in perception on the learning support behaviors of parents, excessive student group, which means that students perceived more strongly than parents the degree of the learning support behaviors of parents, is meaningfully higher than other two groups, excessive parents group and indifference group, on the level of the self-regulated learning.
This study has a significant point in that the statistical result of the research is revealed to be meaningful about the relationship between the self-regulated learning of students and the learning support behaviors of their parents. It implies that the social family-capital of students and their parents with mutual confidence can be a good environment for enhancing the power of self-regulated learning. This study also shows that the family-based support behaviors of parents are an effective factor for enhancing the power of self-regulated learning of their children.
