The purpose of this study is to examine the acculturation tragedies of the intermarried immigrant women as well as the relations between their stress and psychological health.
Subjects in this study are the foreign immigrant women who are married with Korean men. There are totally 229 subjects (80 from Kyongsang-namdo area and 149 from Chungchong Province area) doing the questionnaires including acculturation strategy questionnaire, acculturation stress questionnaire, stress of housewife life scale, hostility scale, and subjective scale.
The research is divided into two parts: the first part examined the intermarried immigrant women's demographical characteristics, the current actual conditions of psychological adaptation problems as well as the relations between them; the second part examined the relations of immigrant women's accumulation, stress, and psychological health through path analysis.
According to the analysis of psychological health predicted by the demographical variables, the longer time their marriages last for, the more intermarried immigrant women accommodate new Korean, culture but also the more stress being as housewives, depression, and hostility they experience. What is more, the more children they have, the more stress being as housewives and the greater depression they have. In addition, the more the monthly average income immigrant women save, the lower their depression is; the more pin money women own, the lower their acculturation stress, depression, and hostility are.
Next, we made the path analysis of immigrant women's acculturation, stress, and psychological health based on Berry's acculturation model. The study showed that the strategy of 'my culture preservation' had a direct effect on 'hostility' and 'subject peace' of individual's psychological health. Moreover, 'my culture preservation' among the strategies of acculturation affected 'stress of acculturation', and at the same time this 'stress of acculturation' exerted influence on 'hostility' and 'subject peace' of individual's psychological health. However, the strategy of 'the acceptance of new culture' didn’t have a direct effect on individual's psychological health, and individual's stresses(stress due to acculturation, stress being as housewives) either.
As to the significance of this study, firstly, this study examined the demographic and psychological characteristics of intermarried immigrant women who are considered as new members in Korea as well as the relation between these two kinds of characteristics; secondly, this study explained the relations of the strategies of acculturation, stresses, and spiritual health by the relation model based on Berry's theory.
