This paper purports to analyze men’s (in the ages of 20s ~ 30s) interest in hairstyles, their preferred hairstyles, and trends. This paper puts its focus on whether men stick to their own hairstyles under the rapidly changing cultural phenomena or they reflect the changes in cultures in their hairstyles.
1. Regional characteristics will have influence on men’s hairstyles.
It was found that regional characteristics didn’t have big influence on men’s hairstyles, the reason for which may be that mass media (TV, Internet, magazines, etc.), which are getting diversified and are easily accessible, have completely broken down regional characteristics that worked as physical obstacles. In addition, economic and technical development has popularized Internet in each region (Seoul,Busan,Gwangju), which has made regional characteristics disappear. By the virtue of the development of Internet, college students in each region can have access to the information on hairstyles at the same time. That is, hairstyles can be spread to each region very fast, which has accelerated hairstyles to be uniform.
2. Men’s hairstyle trend (metrosexual, ubersexual, crosssexual) will be different according to regional characteristics.
Crosssexual is a new trend that has been recently positioned as a new issue in the field of fashion and that is easily accessible through mass media. Therefore, this paper chose crosssexual as the latest trend. However, college students, regardless of regions, replied that metrosexual is the latest trend, while office workers replied that crosssexual is the latest trend.
3. The hairstyles that college students and office workers like will be different.
College students selected the existing hairstyles in terms of their preference, suitability for living, and taste. Office workers selected ubersexual in terms of preference and taste, but selected the existing hairstyle in terms of suitability for living. College students didn’t reflect the trend in preference, taste, and suitability for living, but office workers reflected it. In relation to attractiveness, college students coming from Gwangju and Busan showed the same response, but college students from Seoul showed the same response as that of office workers.
4. The trend that men’s hairstyles are getting feminine will be continued.
These days, male college students tend to have long hair, which is as bullish as that in 1970s and is being increased. However, in 1970s, men tended to let their hair grow without care, but today they tend to care their long hair. Just as the long hair in 1970s was succeeded from 1960s and continued to the end of 1970s, the current long hair will be continued for the time being. Office workers, unlike college students, tend to pursue hairstyles that show their masculine beauty. Men in 20s showed a different response from men in 30s, which seems to be influenced by changes in environment and cultures. As the hairstyle for office workers, ubersexual, which emphasizes masculine beauty more than feminine beauty, will be continuously powerful.
