The Relationship between a Father's Type of Language Control and Children's Social Competence

The purpose of this study is to figure out the type of language control of a father with a child and his child social competence, and to identify their correlation.
To achieve the purpose of the study, the following questions were made.
1. Is father's type of language control influenced by followed variable?
1-1. Is a father's type of language control influenced by his child's sex?
1-2. Is a father's type of language control influenced by his children's
birth order?
1-3. Is a father's type of language control influenced by his age?
1-4. Is a father's type of language control influenced by his educational
background?
1-5. Is a father's type of language control influenced by whether his wife
is employed?
2. Is child's social competence influenced by followed variable?
2-1. Is child's social competence influenced by his or her sex?
2-2. Is child's social competence influenced by his or her birth order?
2-3. Is child's social competence influenced by his or her father's age?
2-4. Is child's social competence influenced by his or her father's
educational background?
2-5. Is child's social competence influenced by whether his or her mother
is employed?
3. What relationship is there between a father's type of language control
and his child's social competence?
This study subjects were 182 children of age 4 to 5 who went to child day care center in Seoul area and their father. As a research tool, questionaries for father were distributed to measure father's type of language control and other questionaries for teather were distributed to measure child's social competence. Collected data were evaluated by t-test and One-Way Anova and used program was SPSS/Win 11.0. Meaningful difference between the group was detected, Duncan Test was used to verify difference between the group.
The result of this study was as followed;
Firstly, a father's type of language control is influenced by his child's sex. Father used more command oriented type of language control to son and position oriented type of language control to daughter. Father was older, he used more person oriented type of language control. Father has more educational background, he used more position and person oriented type of language control. And father who had employed wife used more position and person oriented type of language control than who has unemployed wife.
Secondly, in terms of a child age about child's social competence, 5 years old child had more social competence than 4 years old child. and in terms of a birth order about child's social competence, in order of first child, second child, and only child, the competence was higher. the only child was more uncooperative than child who had brother and sister. Father's age was not meaningful variable to child's social competence, but the more father is young, the more child had high social activity and stable relationship. It was not meaningful variable to child's social competence that whether mother was employed or not. child who had employed mother had higher social activity than who had unemployed mother in sub-variable of social competence.
Thirdly, the more father used position oriented type of language control, the more his child had social competence, and stability region revealed statistically meaningful positive relation in sub-variable.
