The purpose of this research was to present basic data in order to figure out problems concerned with parents’ excessive educational fever and their anxiety, etc. and to elicit solutions thereof, as well as to protect little children from wrong extra curricula education since their very early days having investigated general pattern of such extra curricula education, and analysed how mother’s belief regarding child rearing as behavioral background factors that provokes the extra curricula education for her child was related to the pattern of the very early extra curricula education.
To test this, 238 mothers who had four or five-year old child attending private nursery school were sampled from Gangseo District in Seoul, and were asked to fill out a survey that included the questions concerning the actual state of the very early extra curricula education and mother’s belief regarding child rearing.
To find out actual state of very early extra curricula education and overall situation of parents’ belief regarding child rearing, frequency and percentage were computed out, and to investigate differences between the groups according to variables relative to actual state of very early extra curricula education and mother’s belief regarding child rearing, analyses were performed by using t-test and one-way ANOVA, also to study relationships between actual state of very early extra curricula education and mother’s belief regarding child rearing, Pearson’s simple correlations analysis was conducted.
Summary of the results from analyses are as follows:
First, among total 238 participants who were raising four or five-year old child, 222 mothers responded that they had their children be bred to very early extra curricula education or they had experiences to have had their children be bred to such education, and as reason for having their children be bred to very early extra curricula education, mothers answered that “It is to give children a help for their learning.”
Results from analysis revealed that, as to the kinds of extra curricula education, art and Korean language were positioned with the highest rank on top, and that, 56 respondents out of total respondents reported having their children be bred to four kinds of very early extra curricula education, and it was the largest rate. And that the cost in average for the very early extra curricula education was about 240 Thousand Won.
The results from analysis of differences between actual state of the very early extra curricula education according to general backgrounds of mothers (income, schooling, whether or not having had private education during their school days) showed that the more income they earned, the more expenditure for the very early extra curricula education and the more kinds of extra curricula education they had
And, from the analysis of variables of mothers’ schooling indicated that mothers belonged to the group having graduated from the school lower than two-year college had their children be bred to the more kinds of extra curricula education than mothers who had graduated from four-year college or higher, and that degree of their satisfaction was low. Also results from analysis of expenditure, the number of kinds of extra curricula education, and degree of satisfaction displayed that the group of mothers having experiences of private education during their school days marked higher scores in all factors than those mothers who hadn’t.
Second, the results from investigation of their beliefs in humanity/learning for which they highly emphasized successful achievements, as in the case of mothers’ belief regarding child rearing, revealed that the participants in general inclined to emphasize humanity more than learning to their children.
And results from analysis of their beliefs in maturity/outside influences showed that mothers more inclined to environments so that they had a belief in that they admitted outside influences, especially from parents on developments of their children. The results from analysis of general backgrounds of mothers in connection with humanity/learning revealed that the factor that mostly mattered was schooling, and that the group of mothers having lower education set up a goal for development of their children putting more emphasis on academic achievement, comparing to the group of mothers who had a higher education.
Third, results from analysis of relationships between actual state of very early extra curricular education and mother’s belief regarding child rearing revealed that when mother’s belief in child rearing amongst the beliefs in humanity/learning, for which they highly emphasized successful achievements, was closer to the belief in learning, the kinds of very early extra curricula education and expenditures therewith became larger, and degree of satisfaction was lower in general. However, that there were no significant correlations between beliefs in maturity/environment and actual state of very early extra curricula education.
