The role of the school's education in the 21st century is to manage the changes and characteristics of the future, and actively serve the information-oriented, globalized society. Likely, arts high schools should comply with the current trend and apply the history of arts, techniques and the broad band of knowledge, thereby train professional artists who could understand the relationship between arts and the social, cultural environment.
Presently, the dance education in arts high school aims to proceed a professional systematic arts education, but the situation of the education ground is unable to follow its task. Therefore, the necessity of researching and examining the variety of methods in the creative education as a whole is being approached.
The purpose and role of an arts high school is to train the future dance leaders who would lead the nation's culture as an artist through professionally educating the potential talents effectively. Unfortunately, unlike the world's dance education status, the Korean arts high schools carry a relatively heavy burden in developing advanced quality education for early talented artists in an environment where the university entrance exam policy holds an intensely high stance. As a result, it is challenging to execute the true means of an arts high school's characteristics such as, flexible, diverse professional curriculum contents, and instructing, learning and evaluation methods.
Consequently, the purpose of this research is to develop a foundation for professionals, who solidly understands and experiences dance. Along with the increase of dance population, the arts high schools, which plays an important role in affecting the whole field of dance, is bearing the obligations to satisfying the roles of original and arts high schools with the exam oriented education policy, due to the 7th Dance Education Process. Thus, the arts high school must develop an Integrated Dance Curriculum Model(IDCM) that would effectively and efficiently manage the dance education operation program. The IDCM is to be based on creativity integrating both practical techniques and theological training distinct from the present standardized and schematized training contents.
To achieve the purpose of this research, the research conducted both documentary and study research. Through documentary research, integrated education and dance education process, along with the dance education system and process in America and Korea was thoroughly compared and analyzed. Through study research, the instructors and students requests were taken into account. Also by analyzing the current situation, the Integrated Dance Curriculum Model, IDCM, in arts high school was presented and it is as the following.
1. The basic foundation and characteristics of the IDCM is based on the historical, philosophical, psychological, and social factors that serves as the principles of dance education theory. It is an education process that develops professional in the field of dance based on creating, performing and appreciating.
2. The basic purpose of the IDCM is to develop a talented dignified personal in the field of dance through the professionals integrated dance education, provide opportunity for creative works to enhance the creativity and experimental spirit, develop professionals in the field of performing arts, cultivate the ability to appreciate arts, aim for artistic, aesthetic, cultural education and form a lifelong education.
3. The contents of the IDCM is based on a unified compromising model established for creative works such as dance choreography, movement analyzing, improvisation, dance music, stage art, theater dance. For performing purposes, major and minor dance classes, cooperating projects with other majors, school's private performance, professional performance out of campus, and student oriented workshop performance is included. For appreciating purposes, comprehension of dance, dance appreciation and review is present and for protection from injuries and self management includes body conditioning, anatomy, Pilates, exercise method and career management for graduating class. These courses are all interrelated.
4. The methodological principle of the IDCM emphasizes both the process and results, creativity, imagination, character, emotion, knowledge in theater dance, method of movement and techniques is equally stressed, problem solving and demonstrative instructing method are also equally stressed along with the importance of training.
5. The evaluation of the IDCM is a unified method which continuously examines the improvement and self accomplishment through rating the process in a checklist, report, project, quiz, examination, self-survey and audio and video tests.
The realization of IDCM in arts high schools could be gradually established by the practical and medium, long term plans of the school officials. This could only be carried out by forming staffs and organizations that could support the IDCM system. Also adjusting policies, research development plans and projects must be present. In addition, there should be network, not only between dance related curriculums but also other curriculums, to form interrelationship and continuously interaction in education, society, cultural and artistic states through enhanced research. Moreover, changes in the conceptions, education methods and awareness in active practice attitude of dance instructors is necessary. The school should be able to provide a systematic installation and vision so that such goals could be accomplished. Also they should provide an environment that could dramatically accept all the systems.
If these changes are practiced, the dance education in arts high schools would be able to develop the society's request and expectations through an integrated, unified, creative professional in the future, in contrary to the present mechanical, complicating, confusing, disorganized, disassembled situation. To make this happen, the continuous interest in the professionalization of dance education in arts high school by dance authorities and the government is crucial.
