In Korean dance, there are inclusion of dark shade or sorrow. In Korean dance, the grudges don’t stop as simple grudges, but they sublimate audience to the level of freedom, hope and joy, the cheer world. This cheerfulness has been wieldingits power in overcoming great crises in our history. Cheerfulnessis the most essential element in our conscience, and vitalizes our life by venting our grudges and easing our pains as the artistic source of the people to express their lives. Also, it arouses community spirit and maintains the community, and has a potential to lead the community into a better life. The internal motivation to arouse cheerfulness is ‘play’, and this is the existential ground of the conscience of the people. And it plays a critical role to arouse cheerfulness.
Mask dance has its aim to overcome all social conflicts and problems and create a new social order, and is a space where the people disentangle private and public conflicts by that it provides opportunities for the people to express themselves. The cheerfulness inside mask dance is the most practical method to give an outlet for grudges of the people.
The purpose of this study is revealing that how the cheerfulness inside of make dance appeared by studying Yangjubyeulsandaenori, and grasping the nature of Korean dance by examining the role of the cheerfulness in mask dance, and understanding the characteristics of the cheerfulness our dance has, and at the same time placing the cheerfulness as the spiritual ground of today’s dance which is aiming at creative dance
This study has go through the concept and characteristics of cheerfulness based on documentary studies and the studies of audio and video materials and tried to grasp the nature of cheerfulness, and studied the origin and background of the Yangjubyeulsandaenori, the formation of exaggeration and its content, the formation of the dance and its content, and the conflict structure and its content. Basing on these studies, I’ve studied it dividing the cheerfulness into four categories, social cheerfulness and the cheerfulness of life and death as the internal characteristics seen in the content, the cheerfulness of an entertainment after a ceremony and the cheerfulness of the presence as the internal characteristics seen in the form.
As theresult, first, it transforms immanent problems and conflicts of the society into public issues through art and expresses the social cheerfulness as a festival of life putting the achieved social conscience into action with the veteran, milksop, Sinhalabi, and Miyalhalmi. Second, the cheerfulness of life and death derived from the process of overcoming death and affirming life is expressed through Chimnoli, Chwibalinoli, Sinhalabi, and Miyalhalmi. Third, the cheerfulness of an entertainment after a ceremony creates a conciliatory space by realizing the social conscience and solving conflicts, and is the epilogue unfolding with the last cheerfulness in changing the world into a better one, and shows that our dance starts and ends with cheerfulness. Fourth, the closer become actors and spectators, the better becomes the dance. In this sense, cheerfulness is not confined to only actors but spread all over the spectators, and this is the presence.
The cheerfulness of the Yangjubyeulsandaenori, as mentioned above, solves the immanent conflicts and problems of the society by materializing them in the play. And by doing it, it provides an outlet for the grudges of the people, and strengthens and revitalizes their bond and solidarity. Also, I think that it would be an important spiritual basis for players and audience to feel a sense of unity and sympathize with each other in that today’s dance expresses the conscience of its main subject, which is to go beyond the domain of art.
