This study examined the teacher's questions as one method of learning Korean as a second language, recognizing the importance of an interaction and genuine communications. In the classroom, teacher's questions are important because they provide the opportunity to create output with target language to students.
The purpose of this study is to examine the interaction in the Korean as a second language classroom and to prove that the teacher's questions would make an effect on increasing the length of learner turns. The first research question is to clarify whether there are any differences with the length of learner turns between the class with referential questions and the class with display questions.
The second research question is to examine how impact making more referential questions would be on the interaction between the teacher and the students. To clarify the research questions of this study, the classroom of the intermediate level - KSL students it is investigated the length of all learner turns and the interaction between the teacher and the students.
The contents of this study are as follows: Chapter 1 described the necessity and the purpose of the study and defined referential questions and display questions used in this research. The purpose of this study is to examine the interaction in the KSL classroom and to prove that the teacher's questions would make an effect on increasing the mean length of learner turns and activating the interaction.
Chapter 2 considered the theoretical backgrounds of teacher‘s questions and interaction hypothesis and negotiation of meaning. Also this chapter examined the previous studies related with this study and deduced the research questions and hypothesis of the study.
Chapter 3 described the participants of the experiment, the study procedure, experiment tools, analyzing methods, statistic processing methods and the methods for subsequent interviews. Based on transcription data of classes, it is analyzed teacher's questions and student's speaking and discussed the standard which analyzed the interaction between the teacher and the students.
Chapter 4 analyzed and discussed the results of the experiments. The results are: First, the more referential questions the teacher asks the more words the students answer. Referential questions make students participate in the communications and think the foundations toward their thought, experience, or opinion and then speak more words; Second, it can be seen that referential questions stimulate the interaction between the teacher and the students more actively and make more extended interaction which is not the intiation of the teacher and the simple response structure that students make in the linear class. Also, if there is a negotiation of meaning resulting from the problems during communication, it is recognized that the type of the teacher's questions which encouraged students to try to solve problems is the referential questions
Like these, the difference in the length of learner turns and interaction is reflected by the type of the teacher's questions. In the case of referential questions by asking opinions, the reason for opinion, and the experiences, it can stimulate the students' motivation to participate in conversations and extended conversations spontaneously. If the students respond to referential questions by interviewing, it may be a burden for them comparing to response of display questions. Display questions provide the opportunity for speaking Korean language to even passive student, and be used effectively in explaining necessary expressions and vocabularies.
This study recognized the importance of teacher's questions which encourage the interaction in the classroom and observed the interaction in the Korean language classroom in the aspects of the teacher's questions. Recognizing the functions of teacher's questions and using this effectively would be hepful for the teachers to organize more interactional class and consequently it will be helpful for the students to learn Korean language effectively.
