This study is aimed at finding the relationship between the general characteristics of adolescence's use of mobile phones and addiction to mobile phones.
Third grade middle school students in a big city, a mid-sized city, and a small town were selected to complete a questionnaire. The questionnaire surveyed general information about the students, information related to mobile phone use, motives for mobile phone use, levels of self-esteem, degree of CAGE Mobile, degree of addiction to mobile phones, behavior patterns, and the factors affecting addiction to mobiles phones.
The result of the study is as follows:
First, the social environmental factors of mobile phone usage among adolescence affect a pattern of addiction. The results show the differences according to sex, area, life style, school credits, and degree of the relationship with parents · friends·teachers. This coincides with the ecological opinion of adolescence's problem behavior revealed already.
Second, mobile phone usage among adolescence takes an important part in their everyday lives. Most of them use the phones from one hour to three hours a day. They use the phones mainly to get in touch with friends.
Third, mobile phone addiction is closely connected with their motives for mobile phone usage. They use the phones to release stress, to correspond secretly, to overcome loneliness, to access information, to kill time, to improve relationships with others, to maintain anonymity, to practices eventually become habitual etc.
Fourth, there is an indication of a relationship between addictive tendencies and levels of self-esteem, the psychological characteristic of the young. The overuse of mobile phones could be led by a low self-esteem. They need to be taught to develop a healthy self-esteem.
Fifth, physical, psychological, social, scholastic, and family problems according to the trend of are meaningful. They need to be taught the problem of addictive use and to control themselves.
The results of the multi-variate regression analysis to the score of mobile phone addiction are shown that the time of mobile phone usage, self esteem, relationship with teacher, and area are meaningful factor.
We need to develop a counseling program in which adolescence overusing phones are counselled as a means to counter the negative effects of mobile phone usage.
