Although disability is natural-born, it is acquired from man-made variables such as a variety of industrial disaster, serious environmental pollution, diseases and traffic accidents in highly-developed industrial society and because of that, the number of disabled people have been increasing in modern society. Therefore, the final goal of the welfare for the disabled is that disabled people are integrated into the normal people as a member of a contemporary society. To accomplish this goal, the purpose of this study is to seek views on how effective the volunteer work for the disabled people will be and how non-disabled students' attitude toward disabled people will be changed. This study particularly are seeking following questions.
Firstly, how effective are the experience of the volunteer work toward disabled people ?
Secondly, does gender make big differences in the attitude toward disabled people in volunteer work ?
Thirdly, does grades affect the attitude toward disabled people in volunteer work?
The results are analyzed into follows.
Firstly, this study shows correlation in the general attitude toward disabled people between the experimental group and the controled group. That is to say, the experimental groups with higher contact tend to have less rejection on about disability and more positive attitudes toward people with physical disabilities than the control groups.
Secondly, this research also revealed that there are some differences between boys' groups and girls' groups in rejection without any reasons, distorted identification, the limitations on other functions which are not damaged before they participated in the volunteer work. As a consequence of with disabled people, the differences between two groups are decreased.
Thirdly, the first graders and the third graders shows the huge gap in distorted identification before the volunteer work. The long-term interaction with disabled people ability brought about some level of the change for attitudes, identification and tension. therefore may bring about some level of attitude change. Although there are limitations to the generalization of the results, the interaction between the disabled and non-disabled person is not necessarily followed by positive change of attitude and there are big differences in some areas. Gender factor does not appear to have an effect on the level of attitude and it does not matter what grade the volunteers are on. First of all, it is important to educate the roles sand the attitude as volunteers, detailed information and guidelines to help them understand the disability, and elementary supportive skills and helpful tips in advance. In contemporary educational environment, considerations on the change regular curriculum or required subjects should be followed to provide the opportunity to understand the disabled people and have the positive attitude. Secondly, the research also revealed that there are huge differences between boys' groups and girls' groups in rejection without any reasons, distorted identification, the limitations on other functions which are not damaged before they participated in the volunteer work. As a consequence of with disabled people, the differences between two groups are decreased. Hence, the volunteer work is successful in that it draws attention to disabled people somehow, yet it cannot be assumed contact between disabled and non-disabled people will automatically be positive in changing the attitudes.
