The purpose of this study was to examine the changes of physical constitution and basic physical strength by the application of circuit training program to four students with mental retardation for 12 weeks.
Measurement tools included Fatness Measuring System GL-150, Stop Watch, and measuring tapes.
The physical constitutions, the body-fat ratio and the body-mass index, were examined by the calculation of the values with WHR and BMI formula, and the basic physical-strength measurements were identified by the school's physique-test items.
The results obtained by the application of the circuit training program for 12 weeks were as follows.
First, changes of the physical constitution were as follows;
1. As to the change influencing on weight, student L was reduced by 5.3%, student K was reduced by 5.8%, student B was reduced by 5.5%, and student H was reduced by 5.7%. Each change was meaningful.
2. As to the change influencing on BMI (Body Mass Index), student L was reduced by 5.3%, student K was reduced by 5.5%, student B was reduced by 5.5%, and student H was reduced by 5.8%. Each change was meaningful.
3. As to the change influencing on WHR (Waist Hip Ratio), student L was reduced by 4.7%, student K was reduced by 3.4%, student B was reduced by 3.6%, and student H was reduced by 5.0%. Each change was meaningful.
Second, changes of the fundamental physical strength were as follows;
1. As to the change of speed, student L was improved by 5.2%, student K was improved by 5.8%, student B was improved by 11%, and student H was improved by 7.4%. Each change was meaningful.
2. As to the change of arm strength, student L was improved by 37.3%, student K was improved by 37.6%, student B was improved by 13.6%, and student H was improved by 10.5%. Each change was meaningful.
3. As to the change of muscle endurance, student L was improved by 20%, student K was improved by 20%, student B was improved by 16.6%, and student H was improved by 22.7%. Each change was meaningful.
4. As to the change of leg strength, student L was improved by 6.2%, student K was improved by 7.2%, student B was improved by 4%, and student H was improved by 4.7%. Each change was meaningful.
5. As to the change of flexibility, student L was improved by 5.8%, student K was improved by 5.1%, student B was improved by 38.4%, and student H was improved by 21.4%. Each change was meaningful.
6. As to the change of endurance, student L was improved by 6.2%, student K was improved by 3.0%, student B was improved by 5.3%, and student H was improved by 4.6%. Each change was meaningful.
Consequently, the circuit training program brought a lot of effects to the changes of physical constitution and basic physical strength of students with mental retardation. Therefore, the development of a variety of circuit training programs is important for students with mental retardation to join with interests and spontaneity.
