The object of this research is to determine and compare the effect of understanding handicapped education program using picture books, image materials and activities on young children's understandings and behaviors to disabled young children. Total 59 participants of understanding handicapped education program were 5-year-old children attending the kindergarten located in chung-nam.
To determine the understanding ability of disorder, one to one interview was done using the picture of the disabled. The questionnaire was developed to research the young children's attitude to the disabled. Crosstabulation Analysis was performed to test whether there was a difference in understanding and behaviors to the disabled by understanding handicapped education program
The results are as follows.
First, understanding handicapped education program was efficient in young children's understanding and behavior changes on the disabled children. They understood not only the definition of disorder but also the causes and kinds of the disorder. They had positive behaviors treating the disabled as their normal friends.
Second, understanding handicapped education program using picture books, image materials and activities showed a positive effect on young children's understandings and behaviors to disabled children. Generally, activity program was the most efficient in understanding the definition and kinds of disorder.
Therefore understanding handicapped education program using picture books, image materials and activities had a positive effect on young children's understandings and behaviors about disabled children. Direct experiences such as activities was more efficient than indirect experiences such as picture books and image materials in understanding the definition and kinds of disorder.
