Background : In Sasang Constitutional medicine, there are unique constitutions which are differentiated by four types of characters and emotions. These characters and emotions decide the movement of Qi going up and coming down and in this way cause not only the unstability of mind but also the unbalance of body. So we can relate these unbalances to those of central nervous system and autonomic nervous system which control whole spiritual activities, senses, motions, etc. We examined this relation using EEG reflecting a part of brain function. So the analysis of EEG of Sasang Constitution will show the difference of reactions for stimulus. This is the reason we investigated this study.
Methods : We investigated on 45 healthy volunteers consisted of 11 Soyangin , 14 Soeumin and 20 Taeumin. First Sasang Constitutional medical doctor differentiated the volunteers and we checked first EEG for 2 minutes. After that we measured EEG showing the stimulus. And, we rechecked EEG for 2 minutes after stimulus had been shown. We also made up questions for fear stimulus.
Results : 1. Soeumin group showed significant fear-emotion compared with Soyangin in questionnaire
2. There were significant changes in comparison of mean brain waves. The mean of relative α of Taeumin group significantly decreased compared with Soyanin group in during stimulus time, and the mean of fast-α of Taeumin group significantly decreased compared with Soyanin group in post-stimulus time
3. Relative α of Soeumin group significantly more decreased compared with Taeumin group in T3 area of the variation Ⅰ
4. Relative fast-α of Soyangin group significantly more increased and decreased compared with Soeumin group in T3 area of the variation Ⅰ and variation Ⅱ
5. Relative fast-α of Soyangin group significantly more decreased compared with other groups in F3 area of the variation Ⅱ
6. Relative β of Taeumin group significantly more increased compared with Soeumin group in Fp2 area of the variation Ⅰ
7. Relative high-β of Soyagin group significantly more decreased compared with Soeumin group in F3 area of the variation Ⅱ
8. The α wave/β wave of Soeumin group significantly more increased compared with other groups in Fp2 area of the variation Ⅰ
Conclusions : There were significant changes of EEG in each Sasang Constitutions for emotional stimulus, so we can use this measuring EEG as a objective study of diagnosing Sasang Constitutions.
