Recently, the importance of the GRI archives and the necessity of a special department or a specialist for the preservation and Research Complex have had no early period archives for lack of understanding the importance of archives over last 30 years. management are perceived.
The purpose of this study is to survey the present state of archives management in GRI and to suggest the effective methods for the archives management and preservation.
The subjects of this study are as follows:
1. What are the legal issues of institutional regulations for the GRI archives management?
2. What are the effective methods for improving the archives management in the medium-scale GRI having 300~500 researchers?
The process of this study is as follows:
Firstly, the questionnaire regarding the present state of the archives management and awareness of the importance has been sent out via e-mail to 30 GRI in the science and engineering field from 10th. August to 13th. October in 2005. The questionnaire has been answered by 25 institutes and the results have been analyzed statistically.
Secondly, a case of H institute which has been firstly operating a special department for archives management among the GRI has been reviewed. Through this case study, the effective methods for archives management have been suggested.
In conclusion, the GRI archives should be systematically conserved and managed like other archives from universities, public agencies and corporations. The studies on the GRI archives are now on the starting point and more studies should be made. It is necessary to recognize the importance of the GRI archives and to establish the record center supported by a special department and a budget.
