This paper researches on theological students' understanding of christian dance so that it provides information on christian dance and advances people's perspectives on christian dance.
In order to obtain information about people's perspectives, 420 students in Korea Baptist Theological University/Seminary in Daejeon and Mokwon University in Daejeon answered some questions.
The survey questions are based on books about the Holy Bible, worship, and dances. The questions are predetermined so that the questions are well-suited and well-applied; the predetermination verified reliance and reasonableness of the questions. Based on the results of the predetermination, the problems are adjusted. SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Service) is used in order to analyze the data. The results will be shown using frequency distribution and percentage scale. The results are analyzed below.
First, almost all people answered that they had an experience on christian dance and saw frequently. Also, they positive impression on the christian dance. This showed positive feedback on the christian dance. However, more than 90% answered that they are not participating for christian dance. 51.7% of people said tat they are interested in christian dance but don't know how to participate.
Second, christian dance make worship more exuberant and is necessary for worship and evangelism. If the dance is not based on theological system and just performed periodically, it will be an obstacle to successful worship.
Third, it is concluded that the quality of dance performance in church is not so high, simply because the dance is performed without having definite divine nature and theological thesis. However, many people answered that christian dance is necessary whether a church is big or not.
Forth, when we look at christian dance from cultural perspectives, new type of dances should be created and performed, other than performing existing types, such as hip-hop and jazz. However, some people worried that we should wait until people accept christian dance as omnipresent and ubiquitous. Also, christian dance might not be harmonic to current worship and praise trends.
Fifth, pastors don't recognize christian dance as important so that it hamper the development of christian dance. Moreover, christian institutions or programs are not enough to make more christian dancers and professionals. Therefore, more institutions and programs are needed in order to train more christian dancers and professionals. Also, more funds and supports should be provided for christian dance.
The first thing we should do for christian dance is to improve the lack of understanding about christian dance to pastors, and more supports, funds are needed in order to educate more dancers and experts. In additions, programs that people can easily participate is required in order to improve christian dance.
Sixth, it can be concluded that more cultural evangelism is necessary for the society.
There are some ways christian dance can be improved. More curriculums for christian dance should be developed in theological schools and churches so that they will help people's understanding on christian dance. The curriculums should have complete system and educate people for long-term period. Then, christian dance will be used as a real mechanism for active worship and people will be able to have more opportunity to enjoy christian dance.
