The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of number representation activities using storybooks on young children's ability in mathematics. The Following research questions were formulated :
Research Questions
1) Will the number representaion activities using storybooks influence the young children's ability in mathematics?
2) Will the effect of the number representaion activities using storybooks vary in accordance with the young children's age?
3) Will the effect of the number representaion activities using storybooks vary in accordance with the young children's gender?
Research Hypothesis
1. The young children who experienced the number representation activities using storybooks will be influenced more than the young children of the control group.
2. The effect of the number representaion activities using storybooks will be shown differently according to the age.
3. The effect of the number representaion activities using storybooks will be shown differently according to the genders.
In order to prove the hypothesis above, the investigation has made for sixty children(Experimental group : 30 children, Control Group : 30 children). There were no statistically significant differences in the mathematical ability between the two groups.
The experimental group did the activities which were peformed by way of solving the problems using the number representation activities in storybooks three times a week for five weeks. The class was divided into small groups which consisted of 5 to 6 children in each group. The Control group keep the old way to perform mathematical play using materials in the mathematics area.
Developed by Hye-Jin Choi in 2003 was used for the preliminary and post test, which is constructed of four subsection, the regularities, counting, geometry and measurement of the objects.
For the purpose of verifying the effects of the treatment, the difference between those two groups were analyzed by t-test using the average and the standard deviation shown in the result of the posttest. After the inspection by Analysis of Variance(ANOVA) the data was processed using SPSS 15.0 program in order to find out the reciprocal effects of the age and the gender.
The results of this study were as follows :
1. The experimental group which did number representation activities using storybooks showed a greater improvement in mathematical ability than the comparison group. The result also showed that the young children in the experimental group has improved in all subsections of the mathematical ability, the Regularities, Counting, Geometry and Measurement of the objects.
2. The Counting the objects gave bigger influence in accordance with the children's age than the other subsection.
3. There was no reciprocal difference between the genders in all subsections.
The result of this study has shown that it gives a positive influence to the young children's mathematical ability and can be a efficient teaching method to perform the number representation activities using storybooks.
