The purpose of the study was to examine how audience recognize different domestic and international sports news reports depending on the media press forms. This paper raised the following questions:
1. What differences exist among press forms in reporting domestic and international sports news?
2. What differences exist among news frames regarding domestic and international sports?
3. What differences exist among thematic frames regarding domestic and international sports?
4. How does an audience recognize the sports news frame?
This study used content analysis and questionnaire surveys simultaneously. The content analysis consisted of quantitative and qualitative analysis. On the other hand, the questionnaire was made up of 'news frames', 'the effect of news frames', 'the evaluation of the news frames', 'the patterns of using sports media', and 'population statistical variables'.
The objects of the study were the '2006 K-league playoffs' and the '2006 world cup Germany', where the former represented a domestic sports event and the latter an international sports event. The sports news frames used for measurement were KBS and SBS sports broadcasts as well as the sports news articles of such newspapers as Daily Sports, Sports World, Chosun, and Hangyeolae. The questionnaire survey was completed by 800 undergraduates in Seoul. However, only 757 responses were used in the course of data processing, to the exclusion of 43 responses which failed to meet the established level of reliability.
The statistical techniques used for the analyses of the study were analysis of frequency and cross checking for the content analysis, technical statistical analysis, measurement of reliability, t-Test, analysis of multiple regression and frequency for the questionnaire survey.
The results obtained from the methods and procedure of this study were as follows:
First, the analysis of the press form shows that sports media give much more weight to the international sports news than to the domestic sports news; simply reporting the facts about matches or games with a neutral tone but mostly having few news sources.
Second, the analysis of the news frames shows that sports media reports are mostly merely the results of the sporting events, aimed at audience amusement and popularity rather than the facts.
Third, the analysis of the thematic frames shows that the thematic frames regarding the '2006 K-league playoffs' are a 'victory' frame and a 'heroism' oriented frame while the thematic frames regarding the '2006 world cup Germany' are a 'victory' frame, a 'heroism' oriented frame, commercialism, and nationalism. The differences in frames originated from the characteristics of the international and the domestic sports events and also from audience interest in sports media.
Fourth, the analysis of the domestic and international sports news frames and the research on audience recognition of the news frames show that the audience had a tendency to recognize the sports media news frames as they are, and also that they recognized the international sports news frames more strongly than the domestic sports news frame.
In conclusion, sports media concentrate on reporting the international sports events rather than the domestic sports events, whereas the news frames consist of the results of sports events and of factual stories about teams and players, mostly for public interest or human interest. Differences in thematic frames exist between domestic and international sports news frames, where international sports news frames have a stronger audience recognition than do domestic sports news frames.
