Since the Industrial Revolution, the world has seen economically, culturally, and socially enriched modern times. People have easy access to functional products of convenience, and they come in contact, continually and rapidly ct with cutting-edge products suitable for consumers' tastes, owing to the influences of high speed industrialization. As a result, people's life styles have also changed. However, but along with this process, some side-effects have been generated, including serious environmental pollution, the destruction and alienation in human relationships, as in the almighty material principle. As such side-effects gradually become serious; people became interested in their own inborn attributes and personal feelings. As a result, people have started to make an effort to recover their physical and mental stability.
This study selects, the design products which are close to a person's sensibility on the basis of essential human senses entailed in our contemporary situation. The purpose of this study is to combine sensitive and emotional design engaging the five senses by maximally utilizing the basic and functional properties of products and users' physical satisfaction, based on practicality. This study actually presents some cases of Japanese emotional
design stationery products actually used in everyday life, and presents relevant data. In this way, the position in terms of age of people, basic function of products how they work, and original purpose were presented to the product designers, all of which are considered to be helpful in expressing the individuality and diversity of the products. This study expects to contribute to the way prime products are selected by a user, both mentally and physically under the assumption that consumers do not choose products simply as consumers of design products. Finally, this study aims to forecast the direction of the development of emotional stationery product designs that can be equipped with practicability as well as emotional designs, to suit a contemporary life-style. As functional modern design of the past changes to post-modern design in the 21st century, with its variety subject matters and liberal representations the expression of emotional stationery designs is perceived as a medium of social fashion, of taste and the interpretation of personal tastes and collections, while the environment, including and stationery products, interacts constantly with people. As the use of stationery decreases owing to the rapid widespread use of computers, a problem arises in that basic functional stationery design products are down-graded to simple design products, and consequently stationery is perceived as simply a fancy product.
Under the current frame of reference, where that stationery is consumed as a design product, without consideration for the consumer's convenience, it is necessary to highlight the value of stationery products that may meet user and consumer satisfaction. The emotional design in question is derived from the five senses, and expresses the product's features and user satisfaction using all these senses, rater than just one sense. However, such designs are not always a part of everyday life. In the case of emotional design, all there is, is the design. This study intends to present a direction to develop emotional design through examples, which can be used in everyday life, rather than just as visual artifacts. In Japan, there are many examples of emotional stationery designs available which are also considered functionality. They are a emonstration that emotional products are easily used and appropriate in everyday life emphasizing functionality and convenience, as well as with ergonomics functionality, considering user's features, various emotional symbols, and environmentally-friendly high-quality materials. Thus is emotional design was combined with a consideration for the product's proper function and the user's convenience, for mutual benefit. As a result of this type of stationery design, steady sales are made, and the development of this type of design has been promoted by many stationery firms, because such stationery products are generally used in everyday life, owing to user convenience. Furthermore, sales of emotional stationery design products exhibit how much user satisfaction has an impact upon consumption in today's world. Japanese design characteristics can be categorized into the following three
categories: 1. Emotional stationery design using characters and symbols 2. Emotional stationery design focused on ergonomics 3. Stationery design based on nature-friendly sensibility The current design trend developing more than any other is the ergonomic
emotional stationery design. Japanese emotional stationery products are not products that are simply seen and felt, but are also freely utilized from a point of view of practicality. There are no age limits in terms of consumers and the use scope of use is broad. However, but the greatest advantage is that it is used within all the social and environmental factors. Japanese stationery is an expression of luxury, conveying emotional harmony using five senses, not only through the functional aspect and emotions of the user. That is, Japanese emotional tationery design products can be chosen by the consumers as selective users, not just by users as consumers. The most important purpose and a direction to develop in emotional stationery design lie in value creation of new emotional stationery, and user satisfaction. The design should flexibly change with an approach of motional
problems as well as a functional aspect, and needs to develop as the design that can provide efficient value to consumers and users in addition to designer's good eye.
The significance of this thesis lies in that value standards of design study for emotional stationery products, which can be used in real life, have been provided, and emotional stationery design that is most functi
