The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of art therapy, focused on expressing the figures of body image for unmarried women.
The participants for this study were unmarried women over 20 years old who were going to the church and wanted to need positive body image improvement in Deagu. They randomly placed in two groups by each 10 women into experiment group and control group.
The experimental group took part in the art therapy program, focused on expressing the figures of body image, that consisted of 10 sessions : 120minutes a session, once a week, and from December, 2006 to April, 2007.
The inventory used to verify the effects of the program was the rating scale of body image developed by Cash(1998). To analyze the data used SPSS for windows 14.0 and to see the effects of art therapy program in each groups have been calculated means and standard deviation and then Analysis of Variance (ANOVA).
The results of this study are as follows:
First, art therapy, focused on expressing the figures of body image was effective in enlarging body area satisfaction ; a positive effect on accepting the bodies as they are.
Second, art therapy, focused on expressing the figures of body image was effective in decreasing wishing well of body ; a positive effect on decreasing think of that perfect body must have.
Third, art therapy, focused on expressing the figures of body image was effective in decreasing stress situation ; a positive effect on decreasing unpleasant and angry situation to self-appearance.
Forth, art therapy, focused on expressing the figures of body image was effective in decreasing negative thought and increasing positive thought of bodies.
Fifth, art therapy, focused on expressing the figures of body image was effective in increasing appearance evaluation ; a positive effect on increasing positive evaluation about self-appearance.
As considering this study show that art therapy, focused on expressing the figures of body image was generally positive effects body image improvement of unmarried women. Therefore, art therapy, focused on expressing the figures of body image can be used as a helpful intervention for positive body image establishment.
