The purpose of this study was to examine how a group art therapy program, which focused on group dynamics and was added by art therapy activities, affected the cognitive skills and communication of elderly people with dementia by applying it to inpatients. It's basically meant to lay the groundwork for the development of diverse group art therapy programs in an effort to find a solution in light of interaction between humans and environments from a viewpoint of welfare.
The subjects in this study were elderly people who suffered from dementia and were hospitalized in P long-term care hospital in the city of Gyeongsan. They were divided into an experimental group and a control group, and an experimental research was conducted to look for any possible changes in the two groups before and after a group art program was provided. The instruments used in this study were Gyeon Yong-cheol & Park Jong-hwan(1989)'s MMES-K and Kim Yeoung-suk (1997)'s adapted version of Holden Communication Scale. The collected data were analyzed with SPSS Win 10.0 program, and descriptive statistics and t-test were utilized.
The findings of the study were as below:
First, the group art therapy program served to boost the cognitive skills of the elderly people with dementia. While they were engaged in art activities, they shared exchange by interacting to one another, and art activities gave stimuli to their visual perception and allowed them not to feel left out any more. Moreover, those activities enabled them to train their spatial sense, and their cognitive skills made progress eventually.
Second, the group art therapy program was effective in accelerating the communication of the elderly people with dementia. As the program proceeded, their initial unfavorable and shy responses disappeared, and they expressed satisfaction when they completed their works by using different colors. The clay activities let them unleash their oppressed feelings, and they got to wander around less while being involved in the group activities. They came to have more active communication with one another, become more humorous and express their delight. Thus, their attitude toward communication underwent a change.
Based on the above-mentioned findings, there are some suggestions:
First, sustained research efforts should be made to develop multiple- level programs to let every elderly people in need of welfare services benefit from them.
Second, welfare services for the elderly should be utilized as a medium to improve the quality of life of elderly people with dementia.
Third, it's required to take actions to have social workers serve as professionals who could lend substantial assistance to elderly people with dementia.
When the group art therapy program was used to improve the cognitive skills and communication of elderly people with dementia who were hospitalized in a long-term care hospital, it's concluded that more essential services should be prepared for the sake of Elderly People with Dementia, not as an exhibitionism. Professional, tailored education should be provided to individual Elderly People with Dementia by using efficient programs like group art therapy program, and social workers should try to reinvent themselves and offer better-quality welfare services.
