Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of computerized education program on management practice for children of respiratory communicable disease and their families.
Method: The research design was a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest quasi-experimental design. The data were collected from December 1 to February 25, 2006 over 2007 at one Children Hospital located in D city in Korea. The subjects were paired up 60(30 children and their families-experimental group, 30 children and their families-control group). The experimental group went through 30 minutes educational session on the respiratory disease management(symptom, prevention, environmental hygiene) using by computerized education program from the second day of hospitalization to be discharged. And the control group received usual nursing care. The instrument for this study was developed on a basis of bibliographies of the respiratory disease management. The data were analyzed by ?2 test or Fisher's exact probability test, independent t-test, Mann-Whitney U test using SPSS 11.5.
Results: The first hypothesis that 󰡒the experimental group would make better practice of symptom management of respiratory communicable disease than the control group." was supported(Z=4.350, p=.000). The second hypothesis that ?the experimental group would make better practice of prevention management of respiratory communicable disease than the control group." was not supported(Z=10441, p=.149). The third hypothesis that 󰡒the experimental group would make better practice of environmental hygiene management of respiratory communicable disease than the control group." was supported(Z=4.033, p=.000).
Conclusion: It was found that the computerized education program was effective in management practice of symptom and environmental hygiene on respiratory communicable disease but not enough for prevention management for children and their families.
