Early in the 21 century, globalization appeared as a great power that we couldn't resist. Mutual economic dependencies have increased due to globalization and free-trade. So, the dichotomy between the core/semi-periphery and the periphery in the world is strong creating an increase in population movement.
The phenomena of international marriages which has jumped in Korea is also an effect of globalization. From the 1990's onward, we have met emigrant women whom we haven't met before. The emigrant woman phenomena is an effect from private peoples' choices in globalization.
The purpose of this study is to find out the adaptation method of emigrant Philippino women who came to Korea to marry.
For this study, I interviewed 9 such women who live in Daegu. Through the interviews, I could discover their motive for coming to korea, their marriage process and their life in Korea. But I did not receive sufficient information from these women's interviews. So, I also researched 3 Korean husbands and 3 children of these emigrant women.
I used Homans's 'Exchange Theory' as a hypothesis, and I applied it to these emigrant women's every lives (; I.e marriage motive, economic circumstances, relationship to their family etc.)
The results of my study were summarized as follows;
First, their marriage motive is in accord to the transformed Homans's theory.
Their family's economic condition and affirmative voices which prior to getting married these women send to money to their home influence their choice of coming to Korea.
Second, their marriage's effect is not in accord with the transformed Homans's theory.
In this theory, if they can't send money to their homes, their marriage will be broken, nevertheless they can't send it, they continue in their marriage.
There are two reasons that effect this decision. One is their regular Philippino meeting in Daegu and the other is their English ability.
Emigrant women have increased more and more. But our society is unable to receive various international emigrants now. We have to change our narrow-minded attitude. For this, first, we have to research about various international emigrant women. And then, we have to educate our society that can accept them heartily.
If these two things are achieved, our society will be a society which various cultures are accepted from the bottom of our heart.
