I. Background of the Study
Convention industry is a kind of synthesized one which is deeply related to the industries of residence, tourism, leisure, food, transportation and communication etc, and also is a core of knowledge based industries. There are so many domestic and international meetings and events related to Daeduk R&D Special Development Zone. and Comprehensive City of Central Administration project lately in Daejeon. Despite the high demands in conventions, no world level convention center exists in Daejeon City
Currently Daejeon Convention Center is under construction in Daejeon Expo Science Park Site. The aim of this research is to figure out what kinds of facilities should be there in convention center and how they should be displayed to get a maximum synergy-effect from the operation of a convention center in Daejeon.
II. Contents and Methods of the Research
This research is composed of five chapters such as followings;
Chapter one is introduction part. This section is about the background, purpose, scope and method of the research.
Chapter two is theoretical background part. Concept, functions, types, major facilities of the convention center is introduced and industrial impact to the region in which it located is discussed in this section.
Chapter three is a case study part. Nine cases were chosen as research cases with a given criteria for the case study.
Chapter four is a part of suggesting strategic provisions for Daejeon Convention Center Development. Four previous development plans of Expo Science Park were analyzed with a scope of convention center related facilities. At the end of this chapter some suggestions were provided for the sake of Daejeon Convention Center Development.
Chapter five is conclusion part.
Two types of research methods such as a documentary study and a case study were mobilized at the same time in this research. Books, documents, research articles, reports, statistics on convention centers were used in documentary research.
III. Suggestions for the Daejeon Convention Center Development
Five suggestions for the development of Daejeon Convention Center were provided in this section as a concluding remarks of this research.
Firstly, international business or teleport type is recommended for Daejeon Convention Center Development in terms of development types because of Expo Science Park and Daeduk R&D Special Zone.
Secondly, functional links between the facilities of Daejeon Convention Center and facilities of nearby buildings should be considered at the same time. Hall of Creation which is a center of supporting Daeduk R&D Special Zone, Hall of Daejeon Trade and Exhibition, Expo Science Park should be included in the consideration of facility link.
Thirdly, supporting functions such as business and commerce should be emphasized. To raise high technology based industries for the future, R&D functions should be strengthened.
Fourth-ly, facilities in convention center should be used more intensively by the citizens. To make convention center alive, department store and shopping mall should be constructed within the convention center site.
Fifthly, convention industry is a knowledge based and at the same time large city oriented one. To enhance the structure of economy in Daejeon City, convention industry is an absolutely necessary one.
