As today's academic fields take more interest in the detailed situations of analytical and logical matters rather than conducting and developing in an integrated manner, there happens an absence of integrated and fundamental approaches to education. Furthermore, the trend to regard nature as the object of conquest gains popularity with the wide spread of materialistic views of the world, which has caused many problems at school such as desolation of school and teen problems.
Recognizing that those problems are attributed to the lack of harmony and balance among the many different areas of education including personality, moral, and basic education, many thinkers have suggested holistic education, which started to get noticed in the 1980s, as the solution.
Emphasizing a whole person education and focusing on the overall 'relationship,' holistic education originated in 'perennial philosophy' in terms of ideology, is rooted in 'transperosnal psychology' in terms of psychology, and has the background of 'environment and ecosystem' in terms of society.
The goals of holistic education are not only to deliver knowledge, but also to pursue productive knowledge that can induce the possibility, potential, and creativity from the students to the maximum. The contents it emphasizes include respect for individual humans, experiential learning, education of democratic citizen, education of global citizen, ecological education for symbiosis, and spirituality education. The methods employed in holistic education are diverse and comprehensive. The curriculums of holistic education take the three basic stages of transmission, transaction, and transformation.
This study applied the contents of holistic education into arts education and investigated the methods of arts education to help the students with their internal and external balance and harmonious growth.
The study set out to design the approaches of holistic education in arts education based on the curriculums of elementary and middle school, to integrate holistic education into arts education by analyzing and interpreting the application results of the program application, and to test the possibility of using them in the elementary and middle school curriculums.
For those purposes, the following procedures were taken:
First, a variety of literature including arts education theory, arts theory, and humanities and social science was analyzed, combined, and arranged based on the literature study of holistic education introduced in Korea in order to approach the contents.
Second, the ways to apply the methodology of holistic education theory to arts education were devised based on the theoretical background. The three approaches to arts education were suggested including the perspective of integrated learning, cooperative learning, and environment-friendly learning.
Third, teaching and learning instruction plans were examined to apply the study to the field of arts education later. After teaching the students in the fourth, fifth and sixth grade in elementary school and the first, second, and third grade in middle school in Incheon with the plans, the possibility of holistic arts education was suggested.
The three perspectives of integrated, cooperative, and environment-friendly learning were covered during the class as the teaching plans applicable to elementary and middle school based on the connections between arts education and holistic education. And the possibility of the teaching plans of arts education from the perspective of holistic education was proved by using the class process, finished works, and the activity checklists filled by the students.
This study started with the expectation that the holistic education movement could make a huge contribution to putting the Korean education back on the track in bringing up truthful individuals through truthful education. By integrating the ideas of holistic education into the arts subjects, which allow for more mental images and autonomy than other subjects, the study examined the possibility and efficiency of the trial in resolving the fundamental educational tasks we're facing and suggested some plans to utilize arts education from the perspective of holistic education.
