This study aims to provide a basic data for activation of art appreciation education in early childhood and to help whole person development of early childhood with this data to a righteous character. For that, in process of art appreciation activity applying the guidance methods for a masterpiece appreciation called a generic game, it discusses characteristics of art expression and appreciation capabilities of young child and the change in overall process of appreciation activity in early childhood education centers.
Research questions and hypotheses in this study are as following:
<Research question 1> What is a special feature of the change in art expression capabilities of young child in the process of a masterpiece appreciation activity applying the generic game?
Hypothesis 1-1. A masterpiece appreciation activity applying the generic game may positively affect art expression capabilities of young child.
<Research question 2> What is a distinctive feature of the change in art appreciation capabilities of young child in the process of a masterpiece appreciation activity applying the generic game?
Hypothesis 2-1. A masterpiece appreciation activity applying the generic game may positively affect art appreciation capabilities of young child.
<Research question 3> What changes are happened in the process of a masterpiece appreciation activity applying the generic game?
3-1. What changes are occurred during class in the process of a masterpiece appreciation activity applying the generic game?
3-2. What changes are broken out to the teacher in the process of a masterpiece appreciation activity applying the generic game?
3-3. What changes are arisen to young children in the process of a masterpiece appreciation activity applying the generic game?
To confirm those, it was conducted to 20 young children under 5 years old and homeroom teacher in 00 child care center located in Seoul. The 5-years children who are in middle class family in their socioeconomic background were randomly arranged and homogenized as 10 children for the experimental group and 10 children for the comparative group. As the result of t-test, mean monthly age in both experimental and comparative group was identical as 70 months (t=0.00) each in May 2006. And, a masterpiece appreciation activity applying the generic game was conducted a total of 15 times for 9 weeks to young children in the experimental group.
To analyze the change in art expression capabilities of young children, a standard used in visual arts area of project spectrum (Chen & Feinburg, 1990) was used and with SPSS 12.0 program, it performed analysis of variance by group and by measuring time. In addition, for the change in art appreciation capabilities of young children, it analyzed verbal expression of them during class based on art appreciation model of Feldman (1970). Main results of this study are summarized as below:
First, the change in art expression capabilities of the experimental children showed more significant points in 9 elements such as basic forms, color, spatial integration, color, variations, dynamics, expressivity, repleteness and aesthetic sensibility compared to the comparative group.
Second, the change in art appreciation capabilities of the experimental group applying the generic game equally expressed 4 aspects including description, analysis, interpretation and evalvation compared to the comparative group.
Third, with application of the generic game, it was confirmed infant-centered class, activation of appreciation class, diversity of contents, and integration of appreciation and expression activity.
Forth, in the aspect of teacher, it showed appropriate role composition of teacher with reflective thinking during the appreciation class.
Fifth, in the aspect of young child, it presented active role composition with positive looks during the appreciation class.
Based on those results, it suggests that a masterpiece appreciation activity applying a technique called the generic game is very important to art expression and appreciation capabilities, class, teacher and children. Namely, this study proposes a necessity of activation of appreciation activity in childhood care centers.
