As I had a chance to live in Japan in my childhood, I was naturally able to experienced Japanese culture, custom and Japanese mental structure at that period. However, when I was back to my mother country, Korea, from Japan, Japanese stereotype which many Koreans have brought me to have a feeling which is enormous collision and estrangement that I had hardly understood and agreed with. For these reasons, I started doubting in how Japan and Korean mental structures are different and the motivation have let me continue studying this research project so far. Together with having curiosity about the topic, the relationship between Korea and Japan had become more intimate alliance than any other countries by the friendship event held in both countries, such as Korea-Japan World cup 2002, the open door policy towards Japanese culture from Korean government, the year of Korea-Japan friendship, etc.
However, Japanese politicians' absurd remarks, right-wing powers' manipulation of Japanese history text books and assertion to possess ‘Tokto Island’ are still acted on elements that give negative impacts in this positive stream. Generally these various kinds of social flowing that I have been interested in are happened through people's viewpoint between Korea and Japan and difference of understanding between each other happens from stereotype. Accordingly, I decided to analyze, especially, Korean and Japanese cultural stereotype which cause one of the most significant influences in each other. Hereupon, I explain purpose and pre-study of this thesis in chapter one, presenting the motivation and the reasons of study about culture stereotypes. Next, in chapter two, I demonstrate the definition of the stereotype and discuss how it transits in Korea and Japan by the changes of the time. Moreover, I investigated culture stereotypes of actual situation through four steps regarding stereotypes. Finally, I describe what the social phenomena possibly are occurred by cultural stereotype, and based on the discussion, I explore how Korean teenagers have portrayals about Japan in chapter three.
It is specially important for instructors to analyze little more concretely about incorrect and negative images of Japan or Japanese occurred by the stereotypes and they should get rid of these false portrayals from students There is a survey conducted by students to examine exactly what their portrayals toward Japan are. According to the survey, many students belong to step three in which stereotypes about Japan are not built up yet so that I emphasize about the need of teachers' significant efforts to educate them.
In chapter four, the final chapter, I show how instructors educate students to escape them from the culture stereotype. Moreover, what have to be the roles of Korean government for solving this conflict are shown in the chapter.
In sum, I assume that by various kinds of activities for cultural interaction between both countries will lead to relieve stereotypes and negative images for each other. Therefore, I strongly believe that Korean educators should hold the position to teach how the cultural interaction between Korea and Japan is important, as well as assisting students to prevent stereotypes. This kind of co-efforts is an inevitable element to keep up a future-oriented relationship between Korea and Japan.
