In this research, I analyzed errors that Learners of Korean make in using the case particle of Korean. It's based on Korean Learner's compositions.
The purpose of this paper is to provide useful data of teaching Korean as a Foreign language. And the result of this study can provide some insight for more effective ways of teaching Korean.
At first, I collected materials of this study. Those are 120 free writing test papers from the Korean Learners(form level 2 to level 4) who have studied in 2004 and 2005 in the Chungnam National University Language Education Center.
Secondly, I selected errors of case particles of Korean Language from 120 compositions and then analyzed the pattern of errors by frequency. All errors of case particles classified into 3 types as replacement, omission and addition.
Finally, I surveyed the occurrence rate of errors and the usage frequency. I described how the error patterns of case particles become different and change by levels of Korean learners.
As a result, I found out that most of errors were omission. The main error factors result from over-generalization and simplification affected by the combination of target language, psychological avoidance, and fossilization affected by various learning circumstances.
The error patterns of case particles are related with learner's level of the study in Korean. The errors rate decreases as the level goes up to the advanced. But not every case particles show the same developing procedure. In addition, some error patterns shown a the level 2 or 3 still appears in the level 4.
In order to reduce the case particle errors, the repeated study on every levels is essential. And it is desirable to practice using by pattern drill and compare the differences between written language and spoken language. It is necessary not only to explain meaning and function of case particles grammatically but to show how to use them in discourse.
Errors analysis can contribute to our understanding of foreign language learning process and the result may well be applicable to classroom teaching to bring up effectiveness in teaching Korean as a foreign language.
