In this thesis, I studied the influence that social support have on the empowerment of the visually impaired. For this study, I analyzed the effect of the social support which can strengthen the empowerment of the visually impaired for an active and independent life in society. And through this work, I would like to make the basic informations for the welfare policy and service that can improve the potentiality of the visually impaired.
For this study, I set the next four questions as main points.
First, is there a significant correlation between the formal support and the empowerment of the visually impaired?
Second, is there a significant correlation between of the informal support and the empowerment of the visually impaired?
Third, is there a significant correlation between the subjective perception of social support and the empowerment of the visually impaired?
Fourth, when we control sociodemographic variable and impairment-related variable, what influence do the three kinds of supports - the formal support, the informal support, and the subjective perception of social support have on the empowerment of the visually impaired?
I surveyed 281 persons of the visually impaired more than 20 years old, who are inhabiting in Jeollabuk-Do. I additionally used a braille material for the visually impaired and made some workers of social welfare institutes do personal interview with the visually impaired who are not able to read the braille material.
To analyze the data for this study, I conducted frequency analysis, descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, T-test, ANOVA, and hierarchical multiple regression analysis by SPSS 12.0.
The result of my analysis could be summarized as below.
First, I examined that there is a significant correlation between the formal support and the empowerment of the visually impaired. I investigated the welfare system and service which both central and local governments provide, the service which private institutes do, and the frequency in the use of welfare institutes for the disabled. Then, I came to the conclusion that the number of the use of the service of the private institutes has a statistically significant influence on the empowerment for the visually impaired.
Second, I analyzed that there is a significant correlation between the informal support and the empowerment of the visually impaired. The result is that, in the field of the informal support, the family or relative's support has a positive effect and the relationship with visually impaired friends has a negative effect on the empowerment of the visually impaired.
Third, I analyzed that there is a significant correlation between the subjective perception of social support and the empowerment of the visually impaired. In other words, as the perception of social support is stronger, the level of the empowerment of the visually impaired is higher.
Fourth, I analyzed that, when we control sociodemographic variable and impairment-related variable, what influence the three kinds of supports - the formal support, the informal support, and the perception of social support have on the empowerment of the visually impaired.
The first result is that, in the field of the formal support, the number of the use of the service of the private institutes has a significant influence on the empowerment for the visually impaired. However, the number of the use of welfare institutes for the disabled has a negative effect on it. The second result is that, in the field of the informal support, more family or relatives have even more positive effect, but more visually impaired friends have a negative effect on it. The third result is that the stronger perception of social support can lead to the higher level of the empowerment for the visually impaired.
I controlled some variables and conducted the hierarchical multiple regression analysis with the formal, the informal, and the perception of social supports. In result, the most influential variable is the perception of social support. If the visually impaired became aware of the social support a lot, the level of his empowerment would be higher. The second influential variables, in the field of the formal support, are the number of the use of welfare institutes for the disabled and the welfare service that the private institutes provide. In the informal support, I pointed out the number of the visually impaired friends as the second influential one. While the welfare service of the private institutes has a positive effect, the variables such as the number of the use of welfare institutes for the disabled and the number of the visually impaired friends have a negative effect.
This study made a contribution to offering the basis of improving the empowerment of the visually impaired. Especially, under the circumstances that we have scarcely studied the social support and the empowerment of the visually impaired, I provided the basic data for developing the formal and the informal supports, which is the main purpose of this study.
