With regard to the effective and efficient role performance of community children center workers, the negative effect of job stress has been raised as the biggest problem. Thus, the present study purposed to examine the relation between job stress in workers at community children centers throughout the country and the organizational characteristics and general details of the community children centers, to make plans for effective improvement, and to contribute to community children center workers’ adaptation to their work environment so that they can carry out their duties more effectively and efficiently and have more fruitful life in their work.
For these purposes, we formulated four research questions as follows.
<Question 1> What effects do the general characteristics of the subjects have on the workers’ job stress factors?
<Question 2> What effects do the perceived organizational characteristics of community children centers have on the workers’ occupational role among their job stress factors?
<Question 3> What effects do the perceived organizational characteristics of community children centers have on the workers’ personal tension among their job stress factors?
<Question 4> What effects do personal resource, which is classified as overcoming resource among the workers’ job stress factors, have on other job stress factors?
After formulating the research questions through literature review, we conducted a questionnaire survey of workers at 200 community children centers throughout the country. Recovered questionnaires were processed statistically using SPSS 10.0 for Windows. The results of the survey were analyzed through frequency analysis, descriptive statistical analysis, Pearson’s correlation analysis, linear regression analysis and multiple regression analysis.
The results of this research are summarized as follows.
As for Question 1 concerning community children center workers’ perception of job stress, age among their demographical characteristics showed the most significant correlation with the physical environment of occupational role, and the length of service at the current community children center and the total length of experience showed the most significant correlation with the ambiguity of occupational role.
As for Question 2 concerning the correlation between the perceived sub-factors of organizational characteristics and job stress factors, the boundary of occupational role was in a significant positive correlation with many sub-factors. This suggests that there should be clear distinction between experiential and conflicting demands and job-related duties in workers’ roles to be performed.
As for Question 3 concerning the correlation between the perceived sub-factors of organizational characteristic and personal tension among job stress factors, personal mutual tension showed a somewhat highly significant correlation with most sub-factors.
As for Question 4 concerning the correlation between the sub-factors of personal resources and occupational role and personal tension among job stress factors, personal recreation resources showed a significant correlation with almost every sub-factor of occupational role and personal tension. This suggests that job stress can be resolved depending on whether to have personal resources for having pleasure and relaxation from regular recreational activities, so personal recreation resources are important for field workers.
From the results of this study as presented above was found that personal resources for overcoming job stress and the sub-factors of perceived organizational characteristic are in a significant correlation with community children center workers’ job stress.
Accordingly, when efforts to resolve job stress in field workers at community children centers are made by expanding re-education for the workers to acquire personal overcoming resources, clarifying the boundary of roles with the manager, assigning duties fittingly to the workers’ abilities, and guaranteeing the workers the organizational environment of community children centers as well as economic and social security so that they can commit themselves to their job, we will have opportunities to provide better welfare services to children from low-income households who are using community children centers and their families.
