The communication children and their parents can contribute to children's adolescence, Especially their self-esteem which is influenced by their parents really matters on their personality and socialisation.
In this research, 4 types of child-parents relationships were defined. First, type "open father-open mother" is a type of their relationship that means both parents are communicable with their children. Second, type "open father-closed mother" describes the relationship where only the mother has a communication problem with their children. Third, type "closed father-open mother" is the one where only the father has a communication problem with their children. Fourth, type "closed father-closed mother" is the one where both parents have a communication problem with their children. High school students in their mid-adolescent phase participated in the survey in order to find out what type of relationships they have with their parents among those mentioned above and how it influences their self-esteem. As a result, we will be able to come up with basic elements improving their self-esteem and programs developing their parents' communication skill with them as well.
Subjects are both boy and girl students attending high schools and the vocational high schools in Seoul and Kyung-ki province. 264 students were finally referred to statistically.
Results are like these: First, type "open father-open mother" relationship and the self-esteem showed a remarkably close connection to each other. the more communicable they are with each other, the higher the self-esteem is. So we can draw a conclusion that it is very important for children to have a good communication with their parents in order to be self-esteemed.
Second, there was nothing remarkable in the connection to self-esteem with either type "open father-closed mother" or type "open mother-closed father".
This suggests that we need to promote a communicational improvement program for parents and their children and target not only the mother but also the father. It also tells us that self-esteem is very important to children. Self-esteem was proved to be a precursor of their adaptation to their society, home, and school. So, children should deserve a proper care such as group counseling programmes in the youth center or their school so that they can evaluate themselves as precious and positive. Based on the result, practical and useful programmes for improving their communications should be considered.
