This study analyzed texts according to the characteristics, type, and structure of discourse, with a focus on the discourse competence which has been basically required for communication with the Korean listening texts. Based on this, it aimed at recomposing the listening texts to improve discourse competence.
It set the items of analysis first in order to compose the listening texts which made the most of the characteristics of the spoken discourse, as the listening texts were regarded as utterances by the medium of spoken language centering around the spoken discourse. The items of analysis were set through the mode of formality according to discourse marker, turn-taking, ellipsis phenomenon, and relation of speakers.
Chapter 4 analyzed the listening texts in detail on the basis of the items of analysis discussed in Chapter 3. First of all, the discourse marker appeared dull in all the parts including type, function, and frequency used in the listening texts. In particular, the function of 'time-gaining' was, clearly, most used in actual discourse, whereas the listening texts focused on 'development and conversion of topic'.
Second, the utterances presented in most listening texts were short because turn-taking appeared below 4 times, while the characteristics of spoken discourse, for example, interaction such as overlapping or intrusion were hardly found. Third, the textbooks published in 1998 showed the lowest rate of ellipsis, while those recently published showed the highest rate of ellipsis. But, they were awkward in part, because it had still no abbreviated expressions, so several types of ellipsis phenomenon should be reflected. Fourth, for the relation of speakers, many conversations were awkward because the worked ending expressions for education were more used than the expressions used by the Koreans in everyday life.
It was conversation that appeared most frequently as a type of discourse. Besides, there were other kinds, for example weather forecast, announcement, etc, but these were merely a few and most were composed of everyday conversations. Though the degree of difficulty needed to be tailored for the beginner's level, the learning strategy and effects would be enhanced if the type of more various discourse was presented with each structure.
Chapter 5 suggested some methods to compose the existing listening texts using the results of the listening text analysis conducted in Chapter 4, and practically recomposed the texts based on the methods.
The discussions of this thesis had some implications, though insufficient : it considered discourse competence in reference to the listening texts, conducted an analysis in detail by setting the items of analysis with a focus on discourse factors, suggested the composing methods for the listening texts according to the characteristics of discourse, and applied the composing methods to the listening texts, in practice.
It is expected that the listening text composing methods would be helpful, just a little, to the developer of teaching materials who develop the Korean teaching materials and compose and manufacture the listening texts, specifically the Korean teacher who should also serve as a developer of teaching materials at the Korean education environment.
