This research is to provide basic data required for Taekwondo athletes' performance improvement and training for coaches' strategy and tactics process by identifying changes in actual competition performance, attack techniques and scoring ability by weight division, through analyses of the competition content after application of differentiated scoring system for the Korean female Taekwondo athletes. Toward this end, 77 competitions of women's division where 154 women Taekwondo athletes participated in the 16th Culture and Tourism Minister Cup Taekowndo Competitions were recorded by using a 6mm digital camcorder focusing on kicking techniques (Front spin kick, quick kick, Narae kick, back kick, X-kick and back spin kick) and scoring by researchers and affiliated people. For more objective assessment, the recorded VTR tape was examined using a checklist in relation to attack techniques and scoring of the athletes three times repeatedly at 1/3 slower speed of real speed in video play. For judgment regarding the score, the scores recorded on the electric sign board were recorded on the camcorder and used them in this research. The analytic results of differences in attack technique use frequency and scores of the Taekwondo athletes in a total 11 weights divisions are as follows:
First, for kick techniques use frequency by weight division, a total number of attack tries were 5233. The frequencies of each technique use were shown as follows: spin kick-2415, quick kick-1522, back kick-565, Narae kick-462, X-kick-230, back spin-40. For total frequency of kick techniques by weight division, it was 505 for Light Weight, 503 for Fly Weight, 494-L-Welter Weight, 492 for Bantam Weight, 486 for Fin Weight, 480 for Feather Weight and Welter Weight, 475 for Heavy Weight, 457 for Light Heavy Weight, 433 for Middle Weight, 428 for L-Middle Weight in due order.
Second, for scores by weight division in terms of kick techniques, a total score for kick techniques was 603, and average score per competition was 11.52. With regard to total scores by kick techniques, 302 was for spin kick, 114 for quick kick, 80 for back kick, 63 for Narae kick, 39 for X-kick and 5 for back spin kick. The Light Weight division showed the highest score with 68 of the total divisions.
Third, scoring success rate of total kick techniques was 11.52%, and scoring success rates by kick technique revealed the following: X-kick-16.96%, back kick-14.16%, Narae kick-13.64%, spin kick-12.51%, back spin kick-12.50% and quick kick-7.49%.
The results in this research are expected to be used as basic data to consolidate the position as Taekwondo suzerain state, as well as to improve Taekwondo performance competencies, by recognizing the importance of various attack techniques under the changed Taekwondo rules and reemphasizing the need of competition operation after applying the differentiated scoring system rule to the athletes and coaches.
